한국이 세계보건기구(WHO) 집행이사국 임기 종료 1년 만에 재진출에 성공했다. The nation has earned reelection to the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) a year after its previous term ended.
3일 보건복지부(복지부)에 따르면 지난달 27일부터 이달 1일까지 스위스 제네바에서 개최된 ‘제77차 세계보건총회’에서 한국을 포함한 12개 신임 집행이사국이 확정됐다. The Ministry of Health and Welfare on June 3 said this year’s World Health Assembly from May 27 to June 1 in Geneva, Switzerland, confirmed Korea as among 12 new members confirmed for the board.
이로써 한국은 지난 1949년 WHO 가입 이후 여덟 번째로 집행이사국에 진출하게 됐다. 한국은 지난해 10월 필리핀 마닐라에서 개최된 ‘WHO 제74차 서태평양 지역위원회’에서 브루나이와 함께 WHO 집행이사국 중 하나로 내정된 바 있다.
This is the country’s eighth term on the board since Korea joined the organization in 1949. In October last year, Korea earned a nomination along with Brunei at the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific in Manila, the Philippines.
집행이사국의 임기가 만료되는 오는 2027년 5월까지 한국은 서태평양 지역을 대변해 WHO의 의사 결정에 중추적인 역할을 할 예정이다. Throughout its term ending in May 2027, Seoul is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping WHO decisions by representing the Western Pacific region.
WHO 집행이사회는 총 34개국으로 구성된다. 서태평양 지역에는 현재 한국과 함께 브루나이, 호주, 중국, 미크로네시아 등 총 5개국이 집행이사국으로 활동하고 있다. The WHO Executive Board has 34 member countries, five of which are in the Western Pacific: Brunei, Australia, China, Micronesia and Korea.
한편, 지난 3~4일 박민수 복지부 제2차관은 스위스 제네바에서 열린 ‘제155차 집행이사회’에 한국 WHO 집행이사 자격으로 참석했다. From June 3-4, Second Vice Minister of Health and Welfare Park Minsoo attended the board’s 155th meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, as executive director of WHO’s Korea branch.
박 차관은 이번 집행이사회에서 ‘제77차 세계보건총회’ 결과 등 주요 의제 논의에 참여하고 캐서리나 보헴 WHO 대외협력 사무차장보, 블레어 엑셀 호주 WHO 집행이사와 양자 면담을 추진해 국제보건 주요 현안과 상호 협력 강화 방안 등에 대한 의견을 교환했다.
There, the official attended discussions on major agenda including the results of this year’s World Health Assembly and held bilateral meetings with Catharina Boehme, WHO’s assistant director-general for external relations and governance, and Blair Excell, Australia’s member on the WHO Executive Board, to discuss major global health issues and raise mutual cooperation.
박 차관은 “한국은 3년간 집행이사국으로서 글로벌 보건체계 강화에 기여할 수 있도록 우리의 경험을 공유할 것”이라며 “다른 집행이사국 및 회원국들과도 협력을 지속할 것”이라고 밝혔다.
“As a member of the Executive Board for the next three years, Korea will share its experience to contribute to strengthening the global health system,” Vice Minister Park said. “We will continue to cooperate with other Executive Board members and member states.”
