[Korean grammar] -(으)ㅁ에도 불구하고 Expressing Contrasts and Opposites

-(으)ㅁ에도 불구하고 is used when indicating that the content in the following clause is different or the opposite result of what was expected based on the action or circumstance described in the preceding clause.

가: 오늘 신문의 1면 기사 봤어요?
Did you read the front page of today’s newspaper?

나: 넉넉하지 않은 형편임에도 불구하고 가진 재산을 가난한 학생들에게 나눠 준 배달원 아저씨 얘기 말이지요?
Are you referring to the deliveryman who gave all of his savings to poor students despite not being that economically well-off himself?

가: 네, 저는 그 기사를 읽고 얼마나 반성했는지 몰라요.
Yes, I can’t tell you how much I reflected on my own life after reading that article.

나: 돈이 많음에도 불구하고 기부에 인색한 사람들과는 비교가 되는 이야기지요.
It (the article) is about the difference between people like him and those who are stingy with donations despite having a lot of money, isn’t it?

• 경력이 없음에도 불구하고 이렇게 중요한 일을 믿고 맡겨 주시니 감사합니다.
I am grateful to you for believing in me and for giving me this important job despite my lack of experience.

• 어려운 부탁임에도 불구하고 김 선생님은 거절하지 않고 선뜻 들어주셨다.
Despite it being a big favor, Mr. Kim didn’t say no and agreed to the request without hesitation.

• 마지막까지 최선을 다했음에도 불구하고 결과가 좋지 않아 조금 실망스럽다.
The results were not good despite us doing our best until the very end, which is a bit disappointing.

1. When this expression is used immediately following a noun, the form 에도 불구하고 is used.
• 거듭된 실패에도 불구하고 그는 포기하지 않고 계속해서 도전하였다.
• 선수들의 뛰어난 활약에도 불구하고 아깝게 승리를 놓지고 말았다.

2. While the form 불구하고 can be omitted from this expression to leave only -(으)ㅁ에도 or 에도, the addition of 불구하고 adds emphasis to the expression’s meaning.
• 경력이 없음에도 이렇게 중요한 일을 믿고 맡겨 주시니 감사합니다.
• 거듭된 실패에도 그는 포기하지 않고 계속해서 도전하였다.

3. This expression can be replaced with -는데도 (불구하고) with no major change in meaning. However, -는 네도 (불구하고) is used more in colloquial language while -(으)ㅁ에도 불구하고 and 에도 불구하고 are used more in written language and thus express a more formal nuance.
• 어려운 부탁인데도 불구하고 김 선생님은 거절하지 않고 선뜻 들어주셨다.
• 마지막까지 최선을 다했는데도 불구하고 결과가 좋지 않아 조금 실망스럽다.
