한국이 캄보디아 대표 문화유산인 앙코르와트의 보존·복원 사업에 나선다. The nation will help preserve and restore Angkor Wat, a Buddhist temple complex in Cambodia that is the Southeast Asian country’s leading cultural heritage.
문화재청은 19일 서울 종로구 국립고궁박물관에서 앙코르와트 유적의 보존·관리를 담당하는 캄보디아 정부기구 압사라청(APSARA National Authority)과 고위급 회담을 갖고 문화유산 분야 교류협력을 위한 양해각서를 체결했다.
The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) on Feb. 19 at the National Palace Museum of Korea in Seoul’s Jongno-gu District held high-level talks with the Authority for the Protection of the Site and Management of the Region of Angkor, aka APSARA National Authority, which is the Cambodian public organization in charge of preserving and managing Angkor Wat. Both sides also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on exchange and cooperation in cultural heritage.
이 양해각서는 지난해 2월 캄보디아에서 발표한 ‘대한민국 문화재청과 캄보디아왕국 압사라청 간 공동 보도문’의 후속조치로 문화유산 보존·관리·활용·디지털화 등 축적된 기술·경험·정보 공유, 워크숍 개최, 문화유산 정책·제도·관리 등을 골자로 한다.
The MOU is a follow-up measure to a joint media statement by CHA and APSARA National Authority released in Cambodia in February last year. The agreement’s main purpose is to have both sides share accumulated technologies, experiences, and data on the preservation, management, use, and digitization of cultural heritage, hold workshops, and develop cultural heritage policies, systems, and management.
문화재청은 이번 양해각서 체결을 통해 올해부터 2026년까지 3년간 앙코르와트 바칸 북동쪽 기단부 보수정비에 참여한다. 또한 앙코르와트 방문객을 위한 관람용 계단, 홍보관 건립 등 관광시설을 정비한다.
Under the MOU, CHA will take part from this year in the three-year maintenance and repair project for the northeast base of Angkor Wat’s central sanctuary of Bakan. The body will also renovate tourist facilities at the complex including a viewing staircase and build a promotional center.
문화재청 관계자는 “이번 사업이 대한민국 문화유산 분야의 국제개발협력(ODA) 역사의 한 획을 긋는 사업이 될 것”이라고 말했다.
A CHA official said, “This project will mark a milestone in the Republic of Korea’s history of official development assistance (ODA) in cultural heritage.”
문화재청은 향후 페루 마추픽추, 아프리카 등 문화유산 분야의 ODA 사업 대상 국가를 선진적·전략적으로 확대해 해당 사업을 선도하는 글로벌 중추국가로서 역할을 강화해 나갈 예정이다.
CHA will also boost Korea’s role as a global pivotal nation in cultural heritage by advancing and strategically expanding ODA projects to other regions like Machu Picchu in Peru and Africa.
