한국의 직장 문화를 말할 때는 회식을 빼 놓을 수 없다. 회식은 업무의 연장이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼 한국인의 직장 생활에서 회식이 가지는 의미는 크다. 회식이란 원래 여러 사람이 함께 모여 식사하는 모임을 말한다. 주로 신입 사원이 들어오거나 회사를 떠나는 직원이 있을 때 회식 자리를 만든다. 연말에는 한 해를 잘 보낸 것을 축하하고 다음 해에도 일을 잘하자는 의미로 송년회란 이름으로 회식을 한다. 또 동료 직원이 아이를 낳았을 때나 집을 장만하는 등의 개인적으로 특별히 축하할 일이 생겼을 때도 회식 자리가 만들어진다. 이 자리에서는 상사와 부하 직원이 가까이 앉아. 근무 때는 할 수 없었던 사적인 이야기도 나누고 건배도 함으로써 친목이 도모되고 유대감도 생기게 된다. 회식은 식사, 노래방 등의 순서로 진행되기도 한다.
When speaking of company life in Korea, we cannot eliminate the get-together at work. This get-together can be considered to be the continuing of work from the daytime, thus it means much in one’s life at work. The get-together dinner (회식 in Korean) originally refers to a dinner meeting with many people. It is usually scheduled for new colleagues or for those who are leaving the company. At the end of the year, the end-of-year party (Songnyunhoi in Korean) celebrates the past year and encourages one another for the good work in the upcoming year. Also, it is held to congratulate colleagues on special occasions, such as giving birth to a baby or buying a new house. During 회식, the boss and the subordinates can get closer and get to know each other better by sitting close and talking about personal things, which is not possible during office hours and drinking to toast. Sometimes the singing room follows the dinner.
