세계 최대 규모 액화수소 생산시설인 ‘인천 액화수소 플랜트’가 8일부터 본격 가동을 시작했다. 이에 따라 수소버스 보급 등 국내 수소경제 확산에도 속도가 붙을 전망이다.
The world’s largest liquefied hydrogen plant on May 8 began full-scale operations in Incheon, a development expected to accelerate the domestic hydrogen economy including the supply of hydrogen-powered buses.
산업통산자원부와 SK E&S는 이날 인천 서구 아이지이(주)에서 ‘인천 액화수소 플랜트’ 준공식을 열었다고 밝혔다. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and domestic energy giant SK E&S said they held a ceremony for the plant’s completion at the headquarters of the company’s subsidary IGE Inc. in the port city’s Seo-gu District.
‘인천 액화수소 플랜트’는 SK E&S가 총 7000억 원을 투자해 구축한 시설로 액화수소를 연간 3만 톤 생산할 수 있다. 수소버스 5000대 가량을 충전할 수 있는 양이다.
Built by SK E&S with an investment of KRW 700 billion, the facility can produce up to 30,000 tons of liquefied hydrogen per year, a volume sufficient to charge about 5,000 hydrogen-powered buses.
액화수소는 상온에서 기체 형태로 존재하는 수소를 영하 253도(℃)의 극저온 상태로 냉각해 액체 형태로 만든다. 현재 미국을 비롯한 캐나다, 프랑스, 네덜란드, 독일, 인도, 중국, 일본, 한국 등 전 세계에서 9개국만이 보유하고 있는 고난도 기술이다.
The fuel is made by cooling hydrogen gas, which is in gaseous form at room temperature, to a cryogenic temperature of minus 253 degrees Celsius. Only nine countries — the U.S., Canada, France, the Netherlands, Germany, India, China, Japan and Korea — possess this highly advanced technology.
기체수소 대비 부피를 800분의 1로 줄일 수 있어 운송효율이 10배 이상 높고 수소차, 수소버스 등 수소 교통수단 보급 확산에 기여할 것으로 기대된다. 초고순도(99.9999%)의 특성을 지녀 반도체, 방산 등 초고순도 수소를 다량으로 사용하는 첨단산업 업계에도 활용된다.
Liquefied hydrogen is 800 times denser than gaseous hydrogen, thus the former’s transportation efficiency is over 10-fold higher and can help spread hydrogen-powered modes of transportation like cars and buses. With ultra-high purity of 99.9999%, it is also used in high-tech industries needing large amounts of pure hydrogen such as semiconductors and defense.
SK E&S는 오는 2026년까지 전국에 총 40개소의 액화수소 충전소를 구축하고 관련 유통망을 조성해 나갈 계획이다. By 2026, SK E&S will build 40 hydrogen filling stations nationwide and form a related distribution network.
정부도 액화수소 전주기 안전기준 개발, 액화수소 핵심기술 및 소부장 연구개발(R&D) 지원 등 액화수소 생태계 활성화를 위해 지속 노력할 계획이다.
The government will also continue to stimulate the liquid hydrogen ecosystem by developing safety standards for the liquid hydrogen lifecycle and backing related core technology and research and development for subcontractors.
안덕근 산업통상자원부 장관은 이날 축사에서 “액화수소 플랜트는 한국 수소경제의 새로운 도약을 이끌 게임체인저가 될 것” 이라며 “금번 플랜트는 정부의 규제완화와 민간투자가 어우러진 협력 사례로, 앞으로도 정부와 민간이 원팀이 돼 수소경제를 선도해 나가자”고 강조했다.
“The liquefied hydrogen plant will be a game changer to lead a new leap forward by the domestic hydrogen economy,” Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Dukgeun said. “This plant is an example of cooperation between government deregulation and private investment, and going forward, both the public and private sectors as one team plan to keep leading the hydrogen economy.”
