인구 2만 3천 명의 도시 무주. 녹음이 짙어지는 여름이 오면 고요한 산골 마을은 달뜬 열기에 휩싸인다. ‘한 번도 안 온 사람은 있어도 한 번만 온 사람은 없다’는 무주산골영화제가 열리기 때문이다. 올해도 영화를 사랑하는 수많은 이들이 산과 계곡의 도시 무주를 찾았다. 일상의 고단함은 잠시 잊고 자연 속에 파묻혀 영화를 한껏 만끽하기 위해서다.
Muju-gun County, Jeollabuk-do Province, has a population of 23,000. As the greenery there thickens in summer, this quiet mountain village area is a hotbed for visitors thanks to the annual Muju Film Festival. A saying goes that there are people who have never attended the event, but everyone who has attended has never gone just once. Many cinema aficionados this year visited this county of mountains and valleys as a temporary break from daily fatigue while watching films immersed in nature.
올해로 12회를 맞는 무주산골영화제에선 5일부터 9일까지 닷새간 국내외 최신 영화부터 다큐멘터리까지 21개국 영화 96편을 상영했다. 무주의 풍요로운 자연만큼이나 다채롭고 알찬 프로그램이다. 베를린영화제에서 호평을 받은 김혜영 감독의 ‘괜찮아 괜찮아 괜찮아!’(2023), 전주영화제 개막작인 미야케 쇼 감독의 ‘새벽의 모든’(2024), 칸 영화제 황금종려작 수상작인 쥐스틴 트리에 감독의 ‘추락의 해부’(2024) 등 전 세계 수작들이 관객들에게 감동과 즐거움을 선사했다.
Running from June 5-9, the festival’s 12th edition screened recent 96 films and documentaries from 21 countries, ranging from recent works from both home and abroad to documentaries. The content was as diverse and meaningful as the region’s abundant nature. Among the works were “It’s Okay!” (2023) by director Kim Hye-young, a film that earned raves at the Berlin International Film Festival; “All the Long Nights” (2024) by Japanese director Sho Miyake that opened this year’s Jeonju International Film Festival in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province; and French director Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” (2024), winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Masterpieces from around the world like these moved and amused the audience.
코리아넷 취재진도 행사 사흘째인 7일 축제장을 방문했다. 차에서 내리자마자 숲을 머금은 싱그러운 공기가 폐부를 가득 채웠다. 故 정기용 건축가가 설계한 무주등나무운동장에 들어섰다. 야트막한 산 아래로 탁 트인 풍경이 펼쳐진다. 관객들은 너른 잔디밭에 형형색색의 돗자리를 깔고 축제를 만끽할 준비에 한창이었다. 운동장 주변을 한가로이 걷는데 무대 위로 익숙한 얼굴이 눈에 들어왔다. 올해 무주산골영화제 넥스트 액터로 선정된 배우 고민시다. 넷플릭스 시리즈 ‘좋아하면 울리는’, ‘스위트홈’의 주역 고민시는 “무주산골영화제에서 영화를 사랑하는 사람들을 많이 만났다” 면서 “처음 배우로 데뷔했을 때가 떠올라 감회가 새로웠다”며 환하게 웃었다.
Korea.net on June 7 covered the event on its third day. As soon as its writer stepped out of the car, the fresh air of the forest filled her lungs. She entered Muju Wisteria Tree Field, designed by the late architect Jung Ki-yong. Below the low mountain lay a wide open landscape. Visitors laid out picnic mats on the grass in a kaleidscope of colors to prepare for the festival. As the writer leisurely strolled around the field, she saw on stage a familiar face. Actor Ko Minsi, who played major roles in the Netflix series “Love Alarm” and “Sweet Home,” was named “Next Actor” at the festival. “I met many cinema aficionados at the Muju Film Festival,” she said with a smile. “It refreshingly brought back memories from the time of my acting debut.”
무주예체문화관으로 발걸음을 옮겼다. 빈부격차와 출산 문제를 다룬 장민준 감독의 영화 ‘딜리버리’를 볼 요량으로. 영화 관람도 식후경. 허기를 달래기 위해 주변을 둘러보니 광장 한쪽에 간식 부스가 옹기종기 모여 있었다. 김치전, 주먹밥, 떡볶이를 비롯해 컵빙수, 커피, 수제차 등 각양각색의 음식을 보자 입안에 군침이 가득 고였다. 2천 원부터 1만 원까지 저렴한 가격대에 환경을 생각해 다회용기를 사용하는 점이 인상적이었다. 한쪽에 마련된 팬 상품(굿즈)점에 진열된 머그잔, 뱃지, 열쇠고리, 자석 등이 눈길을 끌었다. MZ세대(1981~2010년 생)를 겨냥한 물건들일 터.
An arts and culture center screened “Delivery” by director Jang Min-joon, a movie on the country’s gap between the haves and have nots and low birth rate. Visitors before the film started could buy snacks at booths at a corner of the plaza, with scenes of mouthwatering kimchi jeon (traditional pancake), jumeokbap (rice balls), tteokbokki (spicy rice cake), cup bingsu (shaved ice dessert), coffee and craft tea.
The price range of the food was a reasonable KRW 10,000-KRW 20,000 and dishes were served in reusable plates or cups mindful of the environment. The merchandise store sold things like coffee mugs, badges, keychains and magnets, apparently targeting Gen MZ, or a demographic of millennials and Gen Z born between 1981 and 2010.
무주는 노령 인구가 60% 이상을 차지한다. 이런 작은 마을에서 영화제를 하게 된 이유가 궁금해졌다. “당시 예능 프로 중 ‘힐링캠프’가 화제였는데 캠핑 문화에 치유를 덧대는 식으로, 지친 일상을 무주에서 위로받고 쉴 수 있는 문화적 트렌드로 자리매김할 수 있겠다고 생각했다.” 1회 때부터 무주산골영화제를 기획해 온 조지훈 프로그래머가 한 언론과 인터뷰에서 한 말에 고개가 끄덕여진다. 거창한 타이틀도 없이 소박하게 시작한 영화제가 예상 외로 큰 인기를 얻으며 어느새 젊은이들 사이에서 핫한 영화제로 웅숭깊게 자리매김했다.
Slightly more than 60% of Muju-gun residents are senior citizens, so how did such a small town land a film festival? The event’s programmer Jo Ji-hoon, who has planned the festival since its inception, had an answer in a media interview.
“At the time, ‘Healing Camp’ was quite popular among TV entertainment shows, and by adding healing to camping culture, we thought that the festival could emerge as a cultural trend for people to take comfort and rest to relieve their exhaustion from everyday life,” he said. The festival was launched simply with no fancy title, but unexpectedly gained high popularity and went viral among youth as a hot cinematic event.
밤이 되자 등나무운동장은 10CM의 라이브 공연으로 후끈 달아올랐다. 초여름과 어울리는 달콤한 멜로디에 관객들은 한껏 고조된 모습이었다. 라이브의 열기가 가시고 어느새 장내가 조용해지더니 커다란 스크린 위로 프레드 C. 뉴메이어, 샘 테일러 감독의 흑백 무성영화 ‘걸 샤이’가 펼쳐졌다. 여자 앞에만 서면 말을 더듬는 남자로 분한 해럴드 로이드의 코미디 연기가 관객들의 웃음을 자아내며 숲 속의 밤을 물들였다. 목관악기 연주자 박기훈, 피아니스트 계수정, 재즈 드러머 조성준의 특별 라이브 연주는 영화에 생동감을 더했다. 여름밤 숲 내음 가득한 자연 속에서 풀벌레 소리를 들으며 영화를 감상할 수 있다니. 도심 영화제와는 차별화된 무주산골영화제에서만 누릴 수 있는 특별한 경험이다.
When night descended, the performance of solo indie artist 10CM at the field livened up the atmosphere. The sweet melody that went well with early summer seemed to resonate with the audience. After the exciting performance ended and the venue fell silent, “Girl Shy” (1924), a black-and-white film by directors Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor, was projected on a large screen.
Actor Harold Lloyd’s comic role of a man who always stutters when in front of a woman elicited laughter from the audience and raised the forest atmosphere at night. Performances by wind instrument player Park Gi-hoon, pianist Gye Soo-jung and jazz drummer Jo Sung-joon added vivacity to the film. The sound of grass bugs and the scent of nature in a summer forest provided an exclusive facet of the festival differentiating it from typical film festivals in a city.
올해 무주산골영화제는 3만 5000여 명의 관객을 끌어모으며 성황리에 마무리됐다. 축제의 활기와 자연의 여유로움이 공존하는 무주산골영화제. 무주는 다시 종전의 고요를 되찾았고 관객들은 일상으로 돌아갔지만 매년 여름이 오면 반딧불이의 고장 무주는 다시 영화를 사랑하는 사람들로 북적이며 반짝일 것이다.
Attracting 35,000 visitors this year, the event featured the coexistence of the richness of the films shown and relaxation from nature. Muju-gun has regained its tranquility and visitors have returned to daily life with the end of the festival, but this home of fireflies will again bustle with activity and shine in summer next year with cinema lovers.
