한 해를 마무리하고 새해를 맞이하는 ‘제야의 종’ 타종 행사에 참여할 인사 18명이 선정됐다. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has selected 18 people to ring the Bosingak Belfry on New Year’s Eve to mark the 70th anniversary of the event.
서울시는 오는 31일 서울 종로구 보신각 ‘제야의 종’ 타종 행사에 참여할 시민 대표 18명의 명단을 20일 공개했다. 매년 보신각에서 개최되는 타종 행사는 1953년부터 70년째 이어져 오고 있는 한국의 대표 새해맞이 행사다.
The city on Dec. 20 released its list of the 18 leading city residents who will ring the bell on Dec. 31 in Seoul’s Jongno-gu District. This annual tradition has been the nation’s leading New Year’s event since 1953.
올해 행사를 위해 서울시는 코로나19 이후 4년 만에 시민들이 직접 공모 및 추천할 수 있는 시민 대표 추천을 재개했다. 지난달 13일부터 지난 8일까지 후보에 오른 200명의 시민들 중 사회 각 분야에서 귀감이 된 시민, 나눔과 봉사를 실천해 온 시민 등이 시민 대표로 선정됐다.
This year’s edition saw the resumption of public recommendations and voting for the bell ringers for the first time in four years since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Around 200 nominations were made between Nov. 13 and Dec. 8 of role models in social sectors who engaged in sharing and community service.
타종 인사에는 자신이 운영하는 안경원 밖에 쓰러져 있는 기초생활수급 노인을 구한 김민영 씨, 55년간 무료로 약 1만 5천 쌍의 결혼식을 올려준 신신예식장 2대 대표 백남문 씨, 2024학년도 대학수학능력시험 최고령 응시자 김정자 씨 등이 포함됐다.
Among the 18 are Kim Min-young, a Good Samaritan who quickly had an elderly man who fainted in front of her optical store rushed to the hospital and paid for his medical fees since he was on basic welfare; Baek Nam-moon, the head of Shinshin Wedding Hall who gave free weddings for 15,000 couples over 55 years; and Kim Jeong-ja, an 80-something woman who became the oldest person to take the College Scholastic Ability Test this year.
특히 2017년 영주권을 획득해 김포골드라인 열차기관사로 근무 중인 아르헨티나 출신 알비올 안드레스씨도 타종 인사로 나선다. 서울시는 “외국인 거주자가 증가하는 현실에서 외국인들도 한국인과 차별 없이 직업을 선택할 수 있음을 보여줬다”고 선정 배경을 밝혔다.
Also in the group is Albiol Andres, an Argentinian who gained permanent residence status in 2017. He is also the nation’s first foreign subway operator and works for the Gimpo Goldline. The city said, “Amid the growth of the expat population, (Andres) shows that foreign nationals can choose occupations without discrimination like Koreans.”
서울시는 타종 행사를 세계인과 함께하는 글로벌 새해맞이 축제로 확대하기 위해 서울경제진흥원의 ‘2023 서울콘’과 연계해 서울콘에 참여하는 글로벌 인플루언서 6명도 행사에 초청했다.
To expand the bell ringing to a global New Year’s event featuring people around the world, the city will connect the festivities with this year’s Seoul Con hosted by Seoul Business Agency and invite six global influencers to participate.
최경주 서울시 문화본부장은 “‘2023년 제야의 종 타종행사’는 2019년 이후 4년 만에 공개 추천을 받고 처음으로 타종인사 선정위원회를 통해 시민 대표를 선정하게 되어 더욱 뜻깊다”며 “청룡이 날아오르는 새해, 모두의 평안과 행복을 기원하는 보신각 타종의 울림이 세계인의 마음에 닿을 수 있기를 바란다”고 말했다.
“The ceremony for ringing the Bosingak Belfry on New Year’s Eve is even more meaningful because it’ll be the first time since 2019 that the selection committee received public nominations to pick the civic representatives,” said Choi Kyung-ju, head of the city’s Culture Headquarters.
“In the new year of the soaring blue dragon, I hope that the ringing of the Bosingak Belfry that wishes for peace and happiness for everyone touches the hearts of people worldwide.”
