경남 창녕군 전역이 ‘유네스코 생물권보전지역’으로 지정됐다. UNESCO has designated as a biosphere reserve all of Changnyeong-gun County, Gyeongsangnam-do Province.
환경부는 국립공원공단과 함께 지난 5일(현지 시간) 모로코 아가디르에서 개최된 제36차 유네스코 ‘인간과 생물권 프로그램’ 국제조정이사회에서 창녕군 전역(530.51㎢)이 ‘창녕 생물권보전지역’으로 지정됐다고 7일 밝혔다.
The Ministry of Environment and Korea National Park Service on July 7 said the county, which covers 530.51 square km, was designated Changnyeong Biosphere Reserve at the July 5 session of the International Co-ordinating Council for the UNESCO program Man and the Biosphere in Agadir, Morocco.
생물권보전지역은 유네스코가 선정하는 3대 지정 지역 중 하나다. 생물다양성 보전 가치를 지닌 지역을 핵심구역으로 해 인근의 지역사회와 함께 생물다양성을 보전하고 지속가능한 발전 모델을 만들어 가는 곳을 말한다. 이로써 한국은 지난 1982 설악산을 시작으로 창녕까지 10곳의 생물권보전지역을 보유하게 됐다.
A biosphere reserve is one of the major three areas designated by UNESCO. The term refers to a region where biodiversity is preserved and a sustainable development model created jointly with the regional community, centered on areas with conservation of biodiversity as a core value. Starting with Seoraksan Mountain in 1982, Korea now has 10 such reserves with the addition of Changnyeong-gun.
유네스코는 “창녕이 화왕산의 울창한 숲, 넓게 펼쳐진 우포늪과 농지 등 생명체로 가득한 숲과 담수생태계, 지속가능한 농경이 섬세한 균형을 이루며 여러 동식물 안식처가 되고 있다” 며 “특히 우포늪은 지난 2008년부터 멸종위기종인 따오기 복원 사업이 진행되는 등 성공적인 생물다양성 보전의 증거”라고 소개했다.
UNESCO described the county as “encompassing habitats ranging from the lush forests of Mount Hwawang to the sprawling Upo Wetland and agricultural croplands,” adding, “It serves as a sanctuary for several species, nurturing a delicate balance between freshwater ecosystems, forests teeming with life and sustainable agriculture.”
“Notably, Upo Wetland stands as a testament to successful conservation efforts, exemplified by the restoration of the endangered crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) since 2008.”
창녕 생물권보전지역의 핵심구역은 생태적 가치가 높아 국내법으로 엄격히 보호되고 있는 우포늪 습지보호지역과 화왕산 군립공원 일대로 구성됐다. 두 핵심구역을 연결하는 통로인 토평천·계성천·창녕천 유역은 완충구역, 나머지 지역은 협력구역으로 설정됐다.
The main areas of the Changnyeong reserve are Upo Wetland, a complex of natural wetlands, and Hwawangsan County Park, both of which are strictly protected under law due to their high ecological value. Both regions are connected by the basins of the streams Topyeongcheon, Gyeseongcheon and Changnyeongcheon, which were set as buffer zones, and the remaining areas were designated cooperation zones.
창녕군은 습지 및 산림 생태계를 통합적으로 보전하면서 유네스코가 인증하는 우수 생태지역으로서 지역의 친환경 생산품의 부가가치를 높이고 유네스코 지역에 걸맞은 생태관광 사업으로 지역주민 소득 창출을 위해 힘쓸 계획이다.
The county government said it will integrate the area’s wetland and forest ecosystems, boost the added value of eco-friendly products as an outstanding ecological region certified by UNESCO, and help raise the income of residents through ecotourism projects befitting Changnyeong-gun’s UNESCO designation.
