한국을 포함한 40여 개국이 2일(현지 시간) 영국 주도 외교장관 회의에 참석해 호르무즈 해협 재개방 방안을 모색했다.
Foreign ministers and representatives from more than 40 countries including Korea on April 2 discussed ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in a U.K.-led meeting.
이날 각국 외교장관과 대표들은 화상 회의에 참석해 이란에 호르무즈 해협 봉쇄 시도 중단을 강력 촉구했다. 안전한 항행을 위한 국제적 공조와 노력에도 뜻을 모았다.
During the videoconference, participants strongly urged Iran to stop attempts to block the strait and agreed on international cooperation to ensure safe navigation.
회의를 주재한 이베트 쿠퍼 영국 외무장관은 “이란이 국제 해상 항로를 장악해 세계 경제를 인질로 삼고 있는 상황을 목격하고 있다” 며 “호르무즈 해협을 개방하기 위한 모든 경제적·외교적 수단을 모색하겠다”고 밝혔다.
Yvette Cooper, who chaired the meeting, said, “We have seen Iran hijack an international shipping route and hold the global economy hostage,” adding that all economic and diplomatic means would be explored to reopen the strait.
쿠퍼 장관은 회의 후 낸 의장 성명에서도 “이란이 승리해서는 안된다” 며 “오늘 파트너들은 즉각적이고 무조건적인 해협 재개방과 항행의 자유라는 기본 원칙의 존중을 촉구했다”고 압박했다.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Yvette Cooper stressed that Iran must not prevail and said partners called for the immediate and unconditional reopening of the strait, as well as respect for the fundamental principle of freedom of navigation.
이날 회의에 한국에서는 정의혜 외교부 차관보가 참석했다. 프랑스와 독일, 캐나다 등 북대서양조약기구(나토·NATO) 주요 회원국과 아랍에미리트(UAE) 등 걸프 국가, 인도를 비롯한 아시아 국가들이 참여했다. 하지만 미국은 참석하지 않았다.
Korea was represented by Chung Eui-hye. Major NATO members such as France, Germany and Canada, Gulf countries including the United Arab Emirates, and Asian countries like India took part. The United States did not attend.
이번 회의는 첫 단계로, 구체적 대응은 향후 실무급 회의에서 논의될 예정이다. The meeting marked a first step, with concrete responses to be discussed in follow-up working-level talks.
