V+는 척하다, A+은/ㄴ 척하다

나 다음 주 월요일에 면접 봐.
I am having an interview next Monday.
잘됐다. 지난번에 지원한 그 회사야?
That’s good. Is it the company that you applied for last time?
응, 그런데 경쟁률이 높아서 걱정이야.
Yes, but I am worried because the competition rate is high.
너는 외국어도 잘하고 컴퓨터도 잘하니까 너무 걱정하지 마.
You are good at foreign languages and computers, so don’t worry too much.
면접에서 내가 잘 모르는 걸 질문하면 어떻게 하지?
What should I do if they ask me something that I do not know in the interview?
어려운 질문이 나오면 잘 몰라도 알고 있는 척해. 자신감 있는 태도를 보여 줘.
If a difficult question comes up, just pretend you know it even though you don’t know it very well. Show them a confident attitude.

V+는 척하다
A+은/ㄴ 척하다
It is used to indicate a pretended attitude or appearance which is not real.

‘-는 척하다’ is used in an action verb stem. ‘-은/ㄴ 척하다’ is used in a descriptive verb stem. ‘,-은/ㄴ 척하다’ is used to express completion. ‘인 척하다’ is used after a noun.

엄마가 제 방에 들어오셔서 저는 공부하는 척했어요.
I pretended I was studying when my mother entered my room.

저는 어제 학교에 가기 싫어서 아픈 척했어요.
Yesterday, I pretended to be sick because I didn’t like to go to school.

저는 친구의 말을 못 들은 척했어요.
I pretended not to hear what my friend was saying.
