세계 각국의 정상들이 모여 안전하고 함께 사는 삶을 위한 인공지능(AI) 활용을 논의하는 ‘AI 서울 정상회의’가 화상방식과 서울 한국과학기술연구원(KIST)에서 21~22일 양일에 걸쳐 열린다.
The AI Seoul Summit from May 21-22 will have world leaders discuss the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to live safely and harmoniously via videoconferencing and at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology.
한국과 영국이 공동으로 개최하는 이번 회의는 지난해 11월 영국 블레츨리 파크에서 열린 ‘AI 안전성 정상회의’의 후속회의. 지난 회의에서 각국 정상들이 AI의 위험성에 초점을 두고 AI 안전성 강화방안을 논의했다면, 이번 회의에선 AI의 안전성을 강화하면서도 혁신을 촉진하고 포용과 상생을 도모하는 AI 발전방안을 포괄적으로 논의할 예정이다.
Jointly hosted by Korea and the U.K., the event is a follow-up to the AI Safety Summit held in November last year at Bletchley Park in the British city of Milton Keynes. In last year’s talks, leaders around the globe discussed improving the safety of AI while focusing on its risks. At the Seoul gathering, however, participants will comprehensively talk about AI development that boosts safety, stimulates innovation, and promotes global inclusion and coexistence while also raising AI safety.
회의 첫날인 21일 정상회의가 화상으로 개최돼 AI의 안전성 보장, 혁신 촉진, 포용적 미래 견인 방안 등을 모색한다. 주요국 정상과 국제기구 수장, 빅테크 대표들이 참석한다. 이어 22일로 예정된 장관급 회의에선 AI 안전 역량 강화 방안, 지속 가능한 AI 발전 방안 등 보다 구체적인 협력 방안을 협의한다.
On its first day on May 21, the summit via videoconferencing will have world leaders, heads of international organizations and representatives from leading tech companies take part in talks on guaranteeing AI safety, stimulate innovation and push for an inclusive future. The next day, a ministerial meeting will cover more specific measures like bolstering AI safety capacity and achieve sustainable development in AI.
윤석열 대통령은 회의를 하루 앞둔 20일 리시 수낵 영국 총리와 함께 영국 주요 일간 ‘아이-뉴스페이퍼(i-Newspaper)’, 한국의 중앙일보에 공동명의로 특별 공동기고문을 게재했다.
The day before the summit’s opening, President Yoon Suk Yeol and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak published a joint op-ed piece in the British I Newspaper and Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo.
양국 정상은 기고문에서 “이번 서울 회의에서는 AI의 잠재력을 완전히 실현하기 위한 AI거버넌스의 세 가지 원칙을 국제사회에 제시할 것”이라며 “블레츨리에서 시작해 이번 회의를 계기로 더욱 확장된 AI의 혁신, 안전, 그리고 포용의 가치는 앞으로 우리가 함께 만들어 갈 글로벌 AI 거버넌스의 원칙으로 자리매김할 것”이라고 밝혔다.
“Although positive efforts have been made to shape global AI governance, significant gaps still remain,” their piece said. “That’s why we are convening world leaders and CEOs at the AI Seoul Summit on 21 and 22 May – building on the conversation we kick-started at Bletchley Park in November. We believe realising the full potential of AI requires three vital ingredients.”
“The AI Seoul Summit will help to create a vision for AI governance which deals with those gaps, while promoting the fundamental priorities of innovation, safety, and inclusivity.”
