This expression is used to instruct or suggest a course of action to someone. It is stronger than -아/어보세요 and is used when a person wants to give advice or make a suggestion a bit more softly than what can be expressed using the form -(으)세요.
• 건강에 안 좋으니까 담배를 끊도록 하세요.
Please stop smoking because it’s not good for your health.
• 그럼 내일 10시에 회의하도록 합시다.
So let’s have the meeting tomorrow at 10 o’clock.
• 내일부터 학교에 지각하지 말도록 하세요.
Starting tomorrow, please don’t be late to school.
1. This expression is only used in imperative and propositive sentences. Thus, it cannot be preceded by -아/어서 to express a reason in the same sentence.
• 기침이 심해서 약을 먹도록 하세요. (X)
->기침이 심하니까 약을 먹도록 하세요. (〇)
2. When instructed to do something in this form, the hearer can answer using the similar form -도록 하겠습니다 meaning that he or she will do the action being requested.
가: 기말시험을 잘 봐야 진급할 수 있으니까 열심히 공부하도록 하세요.
You have to do well on your final exams to advance to the next grade, so please study hard.
나: 네, 열심히 공부하도록 하겠습니다.
