한국이 국제원자력기구 – IAEA 총회 의장국으로 선출됐다. Korea will chair the annual general assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
외교부는 함상욱 주오스트리아대사관 겸 주빈 국제기구대표부 대사가 16일부터 20일까지 열리는 제68차 IAEA 총회에서 의장으로서 회의를 주재한다고 16일 밝혔다.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sept. 16 said Ambassador to Austria Ham Sang Wook, who is concurrently permanent representative to the international organizations in Vienna, will chair the 68th edition of the event from Sept. 16-20 in the Austrian capital.
한국이 IAEA 총회 의장직을 맡은 것은 1989년 제33차 총회 이후 35년 만이다. This is the first time in 35 years for Korea to chair the event since its 33rd edition in 1989.
이번 총회에서는 북한 핵 문제, 우크라이나 원자력 안전·핵 안보, 이란 핵 문제, 중동문제, 오커스(AUKUS) 핵추진잠수함 협력 등 세계 안보 이슈가 주요 현안으로 논의된다.
The main topics for discussion at this conference include global security issues like North Korea’s nuclear program, nuclear energy safety and security in Ukraine, nuclear issues in Iran and the Middle East, and cooperation of AUKUS, a trilateral security partnership among Australia, the U.K. and the U.S., in nuclear-powered submarines.
함 대사는 의장 수락 연설에서 “IAEA와 국제사회의 소중한 지원을 바탕으로 한국은 원자력 에너지 발전을 위해 노력해 왔고 현재 원자로 26기를 운영하는 세계 5위의 원자력 발전 국가로 발돋움했다”고 언급했다.
In a speech to accept his position as the general assembly’s chair, Ambassador Ham said, “Based on the valuable support from the IAEA and the international community, Korea has strived to develop nuclear energy to become the world’s No. 5 nuclear power, with 26 nuclear reactors in operation.”
이어 “원자로와 기술을 수출할 수 있는 6개국 중 한 나라가 된 한국이 IAEA 기술협력 프로그램의 수혜국에서 공여국으로 발전한 것은 세계 원자력 환경의 극적인 변화를 잘 보여주는 사례”라고 지적했다.
“Korea’s development from a recipient of an IAEA technological cooperation program to a donor nations and one of six countries to export nuclear reactors and technology clearly reflects the drastic changes in the world’s nuclear power environment.”
외교부는 “지난 6월 한국의 유엔 안보리 의장국 수임에 이은 이번 IAEA 총회 의장 수임은 국제 평화와 안보 분야에서 한국의 기여와 위상을 더욱 강화하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다”고 말했다.
In Seoul, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “Following Korea’s designation as chair country of the U.N. Security Council in June, we expect our appointment as chair of the IAEA General Assembly to further reinforce Korea’s contributions to and status in global peace and security.”
