과도한 운동 후 근육이 당기거나 아픈 건 피로 물질인 젖산이 분비되기 때문입니다.
= The reason why your muscles are sore and painful after excessive exercise is because lactic acid, which is a fatigue material, is secreted.

이 젖산이 세포 성장 단백질과 만나 암 세포의 성장을 돕는다는 사실이 처음으로 밝혀졌습니다.

모든 세포에 있는 NDRG3 단백질은 세포 성장과 혈관 생성을 촉진하는 역할을 합니다.

그런데 이 단백질은 정상 상태에서는 자연적으로 분해되기 때문에 제 기능을 못하지만 산소가 부족한 상태에서 젖산과 결합하면 암 세포를 키우는 기능을 한다고 합니다.
= In a normal condition, this protein doesn’t function properly because it is naturally decomposed, but when it is combined with lactic acid in a condition of insufficient oxygen, it reportedly has the function of making cancer cells grow.

연구를 이끈 염영일 생명공학연구원 박사는 “이번 연구 결과가 앞으로 암이나 염증성 질환 등 저산소 현상과 관련된 질병 치료제 개발에 중요하게 쓰일 것”이라고 말했습니다.
= Dr. Yeong-il Yeon at Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, who led the research, said “This research result will be used as an important resource for the development of medicine for diseases related to low-oxygen phenomenons such as cancers or inflammatory diseases”.
