세련된 카리스마와 시대를 관통하는 존재감으로 오랜 사랑을 받아온 배우 메릴 스트립과 앤 해서웨이가 한국을 찾았다. Renowned for their timeless charisma and presence, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway have visited Korea.
오는 29일 한국서 세계 최초로 개봉하는 ‘악마는 프라다를 입는다 2’의 두 배우가 8일 서울 포시즌스 호텔에서 열린 내한 기자간담회에 참석했다. 이 자리에서 배우들은 한국 문화에 느낀 감동을 전하며 작품에 대한 자신감을 내비쳤다.
The two actors attended a press conference on April 8 at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul for The Devil Wears Prada 2, which will have its world premiere in Korea on April 29.
They expressed admiration for Korean culture and confidence in the film.
‘악마는 프라다를 입는다 2’는 2006년 개봉된 전편 이후 20년 만에 나온 후속작이다. 패션 매거진 ‘런웨이’의 편집장 미란다(스트립)와 기획 에디터로 돌아온 앤디(해서웨이)가 20년 만에 재회해 완전히 달라진 미디어 환경 속에서 다시 한번 패션계의 주도권을 잡기 위해 모든 커리어를 거는 이야기를 그렸다. 에밀리 블런트, 스탠리 투치까지 전작 주역들이 다시 뭉쳤다.
The sequel comes 20 years after the original 2006 film. It follows Miranda (Streep), editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, and Andy (Hathaway), now a features editor, as they reunite and stake their careers on reclaiming influence in a transformed media landscape.
Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci also reprise their roles.
이번 방한은 아카데미상 총 21회 후보에 오른 할리우드의 전설적 배우 스트립의 첫 공식 한국 방문이다. 그는 한국어 “안녕하세요”로 첫인사를 건네며 “한국에 온 건 처음인데 저희가 사랑하는 영화, 자랑스러운 작품으로 오게 되어 더욱 기쁘다”고 말했다.
This marks Meryl Streep’s first official visit to Korea.
With a greeting of “Annyeonghaseyo,” she said she was especially happy to visit with a film she loves and is proud of.
이어 “제가 손자 6명 있는데 애들이 ‘케이팝 데몬 헌터스’를 매일 얘기한다” 며 “K-컬처의 영향을 많이 받고 한국 문화를 통해 세계가 연결되어 있다는 것을 느낀다”고 했다.
She added, “I have six grandchildren, and they talk about ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ every day. They are deeply influenced by K-culture, and it shows how the world is connected through Korean culture.”
해서웨이는 “한국은 젊은 세대 문화를 이끌고 있어서 세계적으로 강력한 힘을 가지고 있다고 생각한다” 며 “음악, 패션 등 여러 분야에서 뛰어나 제가 만약 기획 에디터였다면 이런 부문을 독자에게 어필하고, 박찬욱·봉준호 감독도 인터뷰하고 싶다”고 한국 콘텐츠에 관심을 드러냈다.
Anne Hathaway said Korea is a powerful global force in youth culture, excelling in music, fashion and more.
She added that if she were an editor, she would highlight these aspects and would love to interview directors like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho.
그는 별마당도서관을 언급하며 “오랫동안 저의 버킷리스트에 있었던 곳인데 길게 머물지 못해 약간 아쉽지만 최대한 많은 것을 경험해 보려 한다”고 웃었다.
She also mentioned Starfield Library, saying it had long been on her bucket list and she hopes to experience as much as possible despite a short stay.
특히 두 배우는 이날 현장에서 영화의 상징인 빨간색 하이힐에 한국 전통 문양을 더한 ‘꽃신’을 깜짝선물로 받았다. 이들은 섬세한 장인 정신이 담긴 특별한 선물에 감탄하며 고개를 숙여 한국식 감사 인사를 전했다.
At the event, the two actors received red high heels inspired by traditional Korean flower shoes. They admired the craftsmanship and bowed to express gratitude.
20년의 시간은 캐릭터의 서사에도 설득력을 더했다. The two decades that have elapsed since the original film also added depth to the sequel.
스트립은 속편이 나오기까지 20년이 걸린 데 대해 “꼭 필요한 시간이었고 지금 이 시기에 나와야 했다” 며 “저처럼 70세가 넘는 여성이 이런 보스 역할을 연기하는 걸 다른 영화에서 보기 어려울 것이다. 미란다처럼 존재감이 강한 인물을 보여드릴 수 있어 기쁘다”고 말했다.
On why it took so long, Streep said, “This script meets this moment exactly and we had to wait 20 years honestly to be unmoored in the same way we are in the beginning of this film.
“You don’t see almost nearly 70-year-old women playing parts like this woman in any movie or any circumstance,” she added. “It’s fun to see this person (Miranda) who is credibly placed in the world and having that influence.”
해서웨이는 “전편 속 앤디는 22살이었고 사회 초년생으로서 아이디어는 많아도 경험은 적었다” 며 “이번에는 기자로서 원했던 삶을 충실히 살고 많은 경력을 쌓아서 자신만의 관점이 생겼다”고 했다. 이어 “앤디는 이제 미란다와 비슷한 고민을 마주하고 그의 잠재적 파트너로 등장할 만큼 성장한 모습을 보여드릴 것”이라며 자신감을 드러냈다.
“Looking at it from a character point of view, Andy Sachs is 22 in the first film. She has just graduated from college so she is full of ideas, but a little light on life experience,” Hathaway said. “In this film, she has had 20 years to go out and live the life that she has wanted to live to the best of her ability. So I think she has acquired skills, she has acquired a point of view, she has acquired experience.”
“In order for her (Sachs) to walk through the door as a formidable potential partner for Miranda, it would have taken that amount of time for it to feel legitimate.”
세월이 빚어낸 변화와 성장, ‘악마는 프라다를 입는다 2’가 한층 밀도 있는 서사와 깊은 여운으로 관객에게 다가올 것으로 기대된다.
Shaped by time and growth, the sequel is expected to deliver a richer story and deeper emotional resonance.
