한국인 최초 노벨 문학상 수상이라는 쾌거를 달성한 소설가 한강. 언어의 장벽을 뛰어넘은 그의 작품을 향한 관심으로 지금 전 세계는 그야말로 ‘한강 열풍’이다. Han Kang, the nation’s first winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, has spurred people all over the world to seek her works, which transcend the language barrier.
한국에서는 이 열풍을 따라 한강의 흔적을 찾아가는 이른바 ‘성지 순례’가 이어지고 있다. 그 현장을 코리아넷이 다녀왔다. “Pilgrimages” to Korea have started to look for traces of the writer, a journey that Korea.net also joined.
한강의 노벨문학상 소식이 전해진 뒤 처음 맞은 월요일인 14일 오후 2시. 서울시 종로구 통의동 골목길에 자리잡은 ‘책방오늘,’에는 평일임에도 불구하고 사람들의 발길이 끊이지 않았다.
On Oct. 14 at 2 p.m., the Monday after the announcement of Han’s historic honor, the bookstore Bookstore Today in a narrow alley of the Tongeui-dong neighborhood in Seoul’s Jongno-gu District saw a steady stream of visitors, a rarity for a weekday.
이 곳은 한 작가가 운영하는 작은 독립서점으로 굳게 닫힌 입구에는 ‘당분간 책방을 쉬어갑니다. 다시 문 여는 날은 후에 공지하겠습니다. 감사합니다’라고 적힌 쪽지가 붙어 있었다.
This small independent bookstore run by Han had a sign at the entrance reading, “The bookstore is temporarily closed. We will announce when we will reopen later. Thank you.”
지난 일요일까지만 해도 서점 앞은 꽃다발과 함께 수상을 축하하는 쪽지들로 가득했다. 하지만 기자가 찾았을 때는 그 흔적이 모두 깨끗하게 치워져 있었다. 마치 ‘이제는 마음으로만 축하해주시면 감사하겠습니다’라고 한 작가가 말하는 듯 했다.
Through Oct. 13, bouquets and congratulatory notes were piled in front of the store. But the following day saw the removal of all of them, as if Han wanted fans to congratulate her in their hearts.
그렇게 기자가 ‘책방오늘,’ 앞에서 머물기를 1시간 여. 마지막으로 방문객 수를 센 기억이 110명이었다. 아이와 함께 방문한 가족은 서점 간판이 잘 보이도록 기념 사진을 찍고, 혼자서 방문한 한 노신사는 창문 사이로 한참 동안 서점 안을 들여다봤다. 타국에서 온 외국인 친구들은 한복을 입고 서점 앞을 거니는 등 각자의 방법으로 한 작가의 수상을 축하하고 그를 떠올렸다.
In front of Bookstore Today, some 110 visitors came for an hour like a family with children taking photos with the sign clearly visible; an elderly man who stood there for a long time looking into the windows; and foreign nationals seeking to congratulate and acknowledge Han’s historic honor, with some wearing Hanbok (traditional clothing).
‘소년이 온다’ 책을 들고 이곳을 찾은 유하나 씨는 “아시아 여성 최초 노벨 문학상이라는 게 너무 자랑스럽고 이번 기회에 한국의 좋은 여성 작가분들이 널리 알려질 수 있었으면 좋겠다”고 했다. 그러면서 “이번 수상이 한국의 좋은 문학 작품들이 좋은 번역가와 만나 세계적으로 뻗어나갈 수 있는 마중물이 됐으면 한다”는 바람도 전했다.
Yu Hana, who brought Han’s novel “Human Acts” to the store, said, “I’m so proud that (Han) is the first Asian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and I hope this is an opportunity for good Korean female writers to get more widely known.” “I hope that this honor becomes the catalyst for good Korean literature to meet good translators and spread globally.”
미국에서 온 에단 호프맨 씨는 평소 한강 작가를 좋아해 영어로 나온 책은 이미 다 봤다고. “한국의 역사는 (미국의 역사와) 많이 다르지만 한강의 책을 통해 한국의 역사에 많은 관심을 갖게 됐고 알게 됐어요”
Ethan Hoffman from the U.S., a longtime fan of Han’s works who has read all of her books translated into English, added, “Korean history is quite different (from that of the U.S.), but I came to learn more about and grew interested in Korean history through Han’s books.”
서울시 종로구 교보문고에는 한 작가의 수상을 축하하는 코너가 서점 한 가운데 크게 마련됐다. 주말 동안 매진됐던 한강의 책이 일부 입고됐다는 소식에 많은 시민이 이곳을 찾았다. 직원들은 연신 매대에 책을 쌓아놓기 바빴다.
A large section in the middle of Kyobo Book Centre Gwanghwamun in Seoul’s Jongno-gu District celebrated Han’s historic honor, with her books selling out over the weekend. Upon hearing that her books had been partially restocked during the weekend, many visitors flocked to Kyobo, keeping staff busy stocking her works on shelves.
이날 서점에 들어온 한 작가의 책은 ‘소년이 온다’와 ‘작별하지 않는다’ 두 종류. 교보문고 관계자는 “한강의 책을 찾는 사람이 워낙 많아 책을 들여오는 과정도 줄였다”고 했다. 그리곤 “’채식주의자’의 경우 하드 커버로 돼 있어 제작하는 데 시간이 더 걸린다” 며 “지금이라도 빨리 예약을 해야 받을 수 있는 상황”이라고 말했다.
Han’s novels restocked that day were “Human Acts” and “I Do Not Bid Farewell.” “So many people looked for Han’s books that we shortened the book stocking process,” a Kyobo source said. “In the case of ‘The Vegetarian,’ it takes more time to put out because it’s hardcover. You must quickly order the book now to get it.”
한강은 노벨문학상 수상 이후 출판사를 통해 짧은 수상 소감을 내놓은 것 외에 두문불출하고 있다. 17일 열리는 한 시상식에 참석할 거라고 알려졌지만 이 역시 미지수라고 한다. 노벨문학상 발표 후 처음 한강을 만날 날을 전 세계가 기다리고 있다.
Han has kept a low profile since news of her award broke out, other than releasing a statement on the honor. Unconfirmed reports say she will attend the Nobel ceremony on Oct. 17, but the world awaits on when she will appear in public again.
