한국은 사계절을 다 가진 나라다. 계절마다 특색이 뚜렷하고 자기만의 매력을 가진 게 바로 한국의 사계절이다. 한국에서 여름에는 물놀이가 최고고 가을에는 단풍놀이, 겨울에는 눈을 즐기기 위해 스키장으로 떠나는 사람이 많으며 봄은 역시 꽃놀이다. 한국에서는 다른 나라들과 달리 봄이 길다. 그래서 겨우내 잠들어 있던 꽃과 나무가 되살아나는 과정을 생생하게 지켜볼 수 있다. 그 과정은 말로 표현할 수 없을 만큼 아름답다. 그래서인지 한국 사람들은 사계절 중 유난히 봄을 좋아하며 봄이 오는 것을 설레며 기다린다. 한국에서 생활하는 시간이 길어질수록 나도 서서히 그 이유를 알 것만 같다. 봄은 사계절 중 굉장히 특별하고 아름다운 계절이라는 생각이 든다. 잠들어 있었던 자연이 깊은 꿈속에서 깨어나면서 태양의 빛도 유난히 따뜻해 보인다. 게다가 봄이 오니 주변 모든 것이 알록달록해지고 새로운 생명이 나타나는 것처럼, 새 삶이 시작한다는 의미가 담겨 있어서 한국 사람들이 더 좋아하지 않을까 싶다. 봄은 한 해를 시작하는 첫 번째 계절이다. 특히 한국인에게 봄이란 신학기, 새 학교, 취업 등 많은 일들이 일어나는 중요한 시기다. 뿐만 아니라 봄이 다가올수록 결혼 소식도 하나, 둘씩 들려오는데, 봄은 역시 새 삶을 위한 희망과 행운을 주는 계절인가 보다라는 생각이 들기도 한다.
Korea enjoys all four seasons. Each of Korea’s seasons has its own characteristics and charms. In the summer, the best thing to do is to play in the water, while in the autumn, it’s going on a picnic to enjoy the red, orange and yellow leaves. In the winter, many people go to ski resorts to enjoy the snow, and in the spring, of course, it is spring picnics and enjoying the spring flowers.
Korea’s spring tends to be relatively longer than spring in other countries and thus the entire process of flowers and trees waking up from their sleep over the wintertime is visibly seen in the spring. That process is ineffably beautiful. Maybe because of this reason, people particularly like the spring and wait for it to come with throbbing hearts.
As I stay longer in Korea, I feel as if I can understand why people like the spring more than other seasons. Among the four seasons, spring seems to be a particularly special and beautiful season. The nature that has been asleep is awoken out of a dream and the sun shines exceptionally warmly. Spring, moreover, symbolizes the beginning of a new life as everything around us gets color and new life appears.
Spring is the first season, the “opening season” of the year. Especially for Korean people, spring is an important time of year when new semesters, new schools, new jobs and numerous other new things begin. As spring arrives, in addition, wedding invitations are sent out, making me think that spring may be, indeed, a season that brings hope and luck to begin new lives.
봄이 오고 날씨가 따뜻해지면 한국 사람들은 남녀노소 관계없이 모두 봄꽃 나들이를 간다. 다양한 특색을 지닌 꽃들이 구경꾼들의 눈과 마음을 평온하고 행복하게 한다. 아름다운 봄꽃은 그 동안 춥고 긴 겨울을 견뎌 낸 사람들을 위한 큰 선물이며 봄의 은혜다. 나도 봄의 아름다운 경치를 감상하기 위해 작년 봄에 친구와 경복궁을 방문한 적이 있다. 주변을 돌아보니 연세 드신 분들부터 어린아이까지 다양한 연령층의 사람들이 함께 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있었다. 그런데 수많은 사람들 중에 지긋하신 할아버지와 할머니의 커플이 나의 시선을 끌었다. 두 분이 예쁘게 한복을 입으시고 경회루 앞 벚나무 밑에서 나란히 손을 잡고 사진 찍으시는 모습에, 순간 나도 모르게 반했다. 그 모습을 보니, 봄은 참으로 사람을 행복하게 만드는 사랑의 계절이라는 생각이 들었다. 그리고 뜬금없이 ‘나도 이렇게 예쁘게 나이 들고 싶다는 생각이 들었다.
When spring comes and the weather gets warmer, people go out on picnics to enjoy the spring flowers. The various flowers comfort the observers and make them happy, as well. Beautiful spring flowers are a big present and a grace given from spring to the people who have endured a long, cold winter. I, myself, visited Gyeongbokgung Palace last spring with my friends to enjoy the beautiful spring. While walking around the ancient palace, I saw various groups of people, from the elderly to little children, who were spending a pleasant time there. Among them, one old couple caught my eye. I really came to admire that couple at that moment, as I saw them, dressed in Hanbok, holding hands and taking pictures under the cherry trees in front of the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion. Seeing them, I thought that spring was a season of love that makes people happy. With this thought in my mind, I suddenly realized that I, too, wanted to age and grow old like that cute elderly couple.
한편 한국에서는 봄꽃 중 벚꽃이 가장 손꼽아 기다리게 되는 꽃이다. 벚꽃을 즐기기 위해 대한민국 곳곳에서 벚꽃축제들이 열리는데, 내가 가장 아름답다고 생각하는 곳은 바로 진해 군항제이다. 진해가 벚꽃으로 유명한 이유는 환상적인 풍경과 낭만적인 분위기를 모두 가지고 있는 벚꽃의 천국이기 때문이다. 그래서일까? 벚꽃을 보기위해 전국 여기저기서 진해로 몰려드는 사람이 많아, 가는 길은 결코 쉬운 일은 아니다. 그러나 벚꽃을 본 순간, 입가엔 저절로 미소가 지어지고 모든 고민거리는 순식간에 사라져버린다. 특히 진해 군항제에서는 로망스 다리, 강 위에 달린 우산들과 각종 조명 퍼레이드가 아름답다. 하지만 그 중에 가장 내 마음을 끌어당긴 것은, 바로 기찻길이었다. 기찻길 양쪽에 가득한 벚꽃은 묘한 분위기와 아름다움을 품고 있었다. 그래서인지 커플들이 가장 좋아하는 장소로 알려졌다. 한편, 진해에 점점 어둠이 드리우면 벚꽃이 활짝 피어 있는 거리에는 밤이 오는 것을 알리는 포장마차의 불빛들이 하나 둘 밝아 온다. 밤이 왔다고 벚꽃 축제가 끝나는 것은 아니다. 밤에도 벚꽃구경은 색다른 경험이며 그것을 바라보는 모든 사람을 매료시킨다.
Meanwhile, cherry blossoms are the spring flowers that are most-welcomed by people everywhere. Several places nationwide hold cherry blossom festivals so that people can enjoy the flowers. Among them, the most beautiful festival in my opinion is the Jinhae Gunhangje Festival. The festival is held in the southern town of Jinhae in Gyeongsangnam-do Province. It’s famous for its cherry blossoms, as it’s a heaven of cherry blossoms, offering both a fantastic landscape and a romantic atmosphere. Maybe this is why the roads to Jinhae are always congested, with crowds of people visiting from all around the nation.
However, as soon as you see the cherry blossoms, a smile grows across your face and all your concerns and worries soon disappear. The so-called “romance bridge,” umbrellas hanging over a river and a parade of lights, are particularly beautiful. What really attracted me, however, was the railroad track. The cherry blossoms in bloom lined both sides of the track with a certain subtlety and beauty. This is known as many couples’ favorite spot, probably because of the subtle beauty. When darkness arrives, meanwhile, lights on the street carts begin to be switched on, informing us that the night is coming along the street where cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The festival continues even after night arrives. The chance to enjoy the evening flowers under the stars brings out the crowds, giving them a truly pleasant experience.
우즈베키스탄에서는 봄 꽃이 오래 유지되지 않아 금방 떨어지는 것이 매우 아쉽지만, 그 대신 한국에서 상큼한 봄 축제를 즐길 기회가 있어 참으로 기쁘다. 이 글을 읽는 여러분은, ‘한국의 봄’에 빠져들어 한국에 대한 더 하나의 소중한 추억을 만들 준비가 되었는가?
Back in my hometown in Uzbekistan, spring flowers don’t last too long and they tend to wither quickly, which makes me sad. Here in Korea, however, I’m happy that I have a chance to enjoy the fresh spring festivals. I want to ask my readers a question.
