[Korean grammar] -기에 Expressing Causes and Reasons

가: 김소희 씨, 부장님께 보고서 제출했습니까?
Miss Kim, did you submit the report to the department chief?
나: 아까 제출하러 갔었는데 부장님 께서 회의 중이시기에 못 드렸습니다.
I went to submit it a little while ago, but because the chief was in a meeting, I couldn’t give it to him.
가: 그랬군요. 그런데 지난번에 얘기한 기계는 언제 구입할 예정이지요?
I see. By the way, when do you plan to purchase that machine you mentioned the other day?
나: 알아보니까 가격이 많이 올랐기에 가격이 좀 내리면 구입하려고 하고 있습니다.
When I checked the price, it had gone up a lot, so I’m planning to purchase it when the price drops a little.

-기에 is used to indicate that the content in the preceding clause forms the cause, reason, or basis for the following clause. It is mainly used in written language and formal situations.

• 마감 일을 못 맞추겠기에 소희 씨에게 좀 도와 달라고 했다.
Since it would be difficult to meet the deadline, I asked Sohee for assistance.

• 각계각층의 사람들이 모금 활동에 적극 참여했기에 목표 금액을 쉽게 달성할 수 있었다.
We were able to easily achieve our target amount of money because of the active participation of people from all walks of life in the fundraising activities.

• 그 책은 경제 원리에 대해 그림으로 쉽게 설명하고 있기에 아이들이 경제 개념을 익히기에 좋다.
That book explains economic principles easily through illustrations, so it’s good for children to get acquainted with economic concepts.

1. When this expression is used to indicate that something heard from someone else forms the reason or cause of the action in the following clause the form -(느)ㄴ다기에 is used.
• 비가 온다기에 우산을 들고 나왔는데 맑기만 하네요.
• 친구가 인삼을 먹어 보라기에 먹어 봤는데 저한테는 잘 안 맞더라고요.

2. Imperative and propositive forms do not appear in the following clause.
• 가격 이 싸기 에 하나 더 살까요? (X)
• 가격 이 싸기 에 하나 더 사세요. (X)
ᅳ>가격이 싸기에 하나 더 살까 해요. (〇)
