가: 조금 전에 집에 오는 길에 갑자기 큰 개가 튀어나와서 여간 놀라지 않았어요.
I was very surprised when a big dog ran out in front of me on my way home a little while ago.
나: 괜찮았어요? 소희 씨는 원래 개를 무서워하잖아요.
Oh, no, are you okay? You’re normally afraid of dogs, Sohee.
가: 그러니까요. 그런데 그 개 주인이 여간 이상하지 않더라고요. 제가 놀라서 소리를 지르는 바람에 자기 개가 충격을 받았다면서 오히려 화를 내지 뭐예요.
That’s why it was so scary. But the owner of the dog was so strange. He claimed his dog was shocked because of my screaming and actually got angry.
나: 별 황당한 일도 다 있네요.

This expression is mainly used to emphasize verbs and adjectives and indicates a strong affirmation of the meaning despite being always used in a negative form.

• 타고난 성격을 바꾸는 것은 여간 어렵지 않다.
It is extremely difficult to change the personality one is born with.

• 지난 주말에는 난방이 고장 나서 집이 여간지 않았어요.
Last weekend, our house was extremely cold because the heater broke down.

• 여름이면 태풍으로 여간 피해를 많이 입지 않는다.
When summer comes, there is a huge amount of damage caused by typhoons.

1. When this expression is used with a verb, an adverb is always added before the verb. In this case, 여간 can be placed either before or after the noun.
• 그 가수는 여간 춤을 지 않아요.
= 그 가수는 춤을 여간 지 않아요.

2. This expression cannot be used in imperative or propositive sentences.
• 대회가 얼마 안 남았지만 여간 스트레스를 많이 받지 마라. (X)
->대회가 얼마 안 남았지만 스트레스를 많이 받지 마라. (〇)

• 옆에서 수업 중이니 여간 큰 소리로 얘기하지 맙시다. (X)
->옆에서 수업 중이니 큰 소리로 얘기하지 맙시다. (〇)

3. This expression can be replaced with ‘여간 -는 것이 아니다’ with no major change in meaning.
• 타고난 성격을 바꾸는 것은 여간 어려운 것이 아니다.
• 지난 주말에는 난방이 고장 나서 집이 여간 추운 게 아니었어요.

4. When used with a noun, the form 여간 이/가 아니다 is used.
• 우리 선생님은 여간 친절한 분이 아니세요.
• 내 남동생은 여간 고집불통이 아니라 누구의 말도 듣지 않는다.
