[Korean Grammar] -(으)로 말미암아 Expressing Causes and Reasons

-(으)로 말미암아 is used to indicate that the phenomenon or thing stated in the preceding clause is the cause or reason for the result occurring in the following clause.

가: 김재호 선수가 최근 소속 팀을 바꾸었지요?
Didn’t the player Kim Jaeho change teams recently?
나: 네, 감독과의 불화에다 경기에서의 부진으로 말미암아 다른 팀으로 이적을 하게 되었다고 하더라고요.
Yeah, I heard he was transferred because of a disagreement with the manager and poor play coring games.
가: 그렇군요. 그런데 이전 팀에서는 그렇게 부진하더니 최근 이적한 팀에서는 연속으로 골을 다섯 번이나 넣는 선전을 했잖아요.
I see. And after his poor performance with his previous team, he’s played well and has scored five consecutive goals with the team he was transferred to recently.
나: 맞습니다. 그래서 그동안의 부진 때문에 떨어졌던 몸값이 최근의 선전으로 말미암아 몇 배는 올랐다고 합니다.
Right. So people are saying that his value as a player, which had dropped because of his previous poor play, has risen in multiples due to his recent strong play.
• 명절 때만 되면 주부들은 많은 음식 준비로 말미암아 온몸이 녹초가 되곤 한다.
Whenever there’s a holiday, housewives always become physically exhausted from preparing of lots of food.

• 현대 인들은 바쁜 일상으로 말미암아 가족조차도 함께 모여 식사하기 가 쉽지 않다.
Because of their busy daily lives, modern people have a hard time eating dinner together with even their own families.

• 한국인은 짜고 맵게 먹는 식습관으로 말미암아 다른 나라 사람들보다 위장병 발병률이 높다고 한다.
It is said that compared to people in other countries, Koreans have a higher rate of occurrence of stomach disorders because their diets include salty and spicy things.

2. The forms -(으)로부터 말미암다 and -에서 말미암다 can be used to indicate that the immediately preceding noun or noun clause is the cause or basis for the situation described in the subject or topic of the sentences.
• 루이스 씨가 역사에 관심을 갖게 된 계기는 서점에서 우연히 접한 작은 책자로부터 말미암는다.
Luis became interested in history due to a chance encounter with a small pamphlet at a bookstore.

• 그들의 이러한 결정은 상대 회사의 입장을 이해하지 못하는 데에서 말미암은 것이다.
Their decision to do this was based on their inability to understand the position of the company they were negotiating with.
