Minister of National Defense Ahn Gyu-Back and his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani have agreed to expand future-oriented cooperation in the first military summit between the two countries in 10 years. 한국과 일본 국방장관이 10년 만에 공식 회담을 하고 미래지향적인 국방 협력 확대에 뜻을 모았다.
The ministry on Sept. 8 said the talks were held at the ministry compound in Seoul’s Yongsan-gu District. Minister Nakatani was the first Japanese defense chief to visit Korea since October 2015.
안규백 국방부 장관과 나카타니 겐 일본 방위상이 8일 서울 용산구 국방부 청사에서 한일 국방장관 회담을 개최했다고 국방부가 이날 밝혔다. 일본 방위상의 방한은 지난 2015년 10월 이후 10년 만이다.
“Amid the rapidly changing security environment, it is important to steadily promote cooperation among Korea, Japan and the U.S.,” the two officials said in a statement. “We must develop defense cooperation in a future-oriented way.”
두 장관은 “급변하는 안보환경 속에서 한일·한미일 협력을 안정적으로 추진해 나가는 것이 중요하다”라며 “국방 협력 관계를 미래지향적으로 발전시켜 나갈 필요가 있다”는데 의견을 같이했다.
Highlighting potential cooperation in high-tech sectors, both sides pledged to “explore future-centric and mutually beneficial cooperation in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, unmanned systems and space.”
양국은 첨단 기술 분야에서 협력 가능성에 주목했다. 두 장관은 “인공지능(AI)·무인체계·우주 등 첨단 기술 분야에서 미래지향적이고 호혜적인 협력 가능성을 모색해 나가자”고 합의했다.
Seoul and Tokyo also agreed to boost personnel exchanges and maintain regular consultative dialogue including talks between defense ministers. To this end, the ministry said a Korean military band in November will perform at a music festival hosted by Japan’s Self-Defense Force.
양측은 국방장관 회담을 포함한 정례 협의체 운영을 지속해 인적 교류도 확대해 나가기로 했다. 이를 위해 국방부는 “올해 11월 일본 자위대가 주관하는 음악 축제에 한국 군악대가 참가할 예정”이라고 밝혔다.
They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.
“To respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, we will continue working together within the trilateral cooperative structure of Korea, the U.S. and Japan,” the statement added. “We must jointly tackle the issue of rising military cooperation between the North and Russia.”
한반도 비핵화를 위한 공동의 의지도 재확인됐다. 양국 장관은 “북한의 핵·미사일 위협에 대응해 한미일 공조를 지속해 나가겠다”라면서 “북·러 간 군사협력 심화에 함께 대처해 나갈 필요가 있다”리는 입장을 같이했다.
