At first, I got a job at an English academy through an introduction from a university senior. Teaching the basics of English to kindergarteners and elementary school students was quite a challenge, but seeing the young students eager to study gave me the courage to learn Korean as well. I was very lonely in Korea because I left my family and friends in a distant country, but I expanded my network by hanging out with co-workers, learning Korean, and participating in club activities. As my Korean skills improved, I was able to make Korean friends and also accumulated knowledge about Korea. Curiosity preceded loneliness, and I gained confidence as I got used to life in Korea. And thanks to language study and Korean friends, I was able to do a Korean-English translation job that suits me much better than an English instructor.

It is not easy to adapt to a country far away, but in my experience, there are shortcuts. That’s just curiosity. It is natural to feel scared when you go to a foreign country where you do not know the culture or language. But when you approach it with curiosity, things change. ‘What if you don’t know? It means that you need an attitude that says you can do it if you learn it. If you try to get to know a foreign environment with that attitude, you will get used to life in a foreign country and seize new opportunities before you know it.

이민자 정착 프로그램 – Immigrant Settlement Program
한국에는 이민자들이 잘 정착할 수 있도록 돕는 다양한 프로그램이 있다. 대표적인 예로 ‘사회통합프로그램’, ‘조기적응프로그램’, ‘다문화가족 방문교육 서비스’가 있다.

‘사회통합프로그램’은 이민자가 한국에서 살아가는 데에 필요한 한국어 능력을 키워 주고 한국 사회에 대한 이해를 높여 준다. 이민자라면 누구든지 참여할 수 있다.

‘조기적응프로그램’은 이민자가 한국 입국 초기에 참가하는 프로그램으로서, 한국 생활에 빠르게 적응할 수 있도록 돕는 프로그램이다. 이민자 체류 유형에 따라 필요한 내용을 교육한다.

‘다문화가족 방문교육 서비스’는 집합 교육에 참가하기 어려운 다문화 가족을 대상으로 한다. 교사가 다문화 가정을 방문하여 한국어를 가르친다. 그리고 다문화 가정 자녀의 학교생활이나 사회 적응에 필요한 도움을 준다.

이러한 이민자 정착 프로그램은 법무부 사회통합정보망 Soci-Net(www.socinet.go.kr)과 여성가족부 다문화 가족 지원 포털 다누리(www.liveinkorea.kr)를 통해서 안내를 받을 수 있다.
