[Korean grammar] -게 Expressing Aims and Intentions

가: 오늘 외국에서 특별한 손님이 오는 거 아시죠?
You are aware that today a special guest is visiting us from abroad, right?
나: 네, 그분이 불편하지 않 신경을 쓰겠습니다.
Yes, I’ll make sure they feel comfortable (not uncomfortable).

가: 선생님, 뒤에서는 잘 안 들려요.
Teacher, (we) can’t hear you well in the back.
나: 그럼, 뒷사람들도 잘 들을 수 있 마이크를 사용할게요.
Then I’ll use a microphone so that the people in the back can hear, too.

This expression is used to indicate the expected result, goal, criterion, or standard of the following action. Thus, it means the following action Is necessary to realize the preceding action or state.

• 내일 입을 수 있 오늘 세탁소에서 양복을 찾아다 주세요.
Please pick up my suit at the cleaners today so that I can wear it tomorrow.

• 학생들이 출지 않 난방 온도를 올렸어요.
(I) raised the temperature of the heater so that the students wouldn’t be cold.

• 약속을 잊어버리지 않 친구에게 전화를 해야겠어요.
I’ve got to call my friend so that he doesn’t forget our appointment.

1. The form -게끔 can be used as an emphatic form of -게.
• 중요한 내용을 잊어버리지 않 수첩에 메모를 하세요.
=중요한 내용을 잊어버리지 않게끔 수첩에 메모를 하세요.
Please take notes in order not to forget the important points.

2. -게 can also be used at the ends of sentences.
• 옷을 따뜻하 입으세요. 감기에 걸리지 않게요.
Please dress warmly in order not to catch a cold.
• 좀 조용히 해. 다른 사람들이 공부하게.
Don’t make any noise in order to allow other people to study.
