나: 저, 부탁을 좀 드리고자 전화 드렸습니다.
I’m, um, calling to ask you a favor.
This expression indicates that the preceding clause contains the speaker’s intention or purpose for doing the action stated in the following clause. It is mainly used in official situations, such as when giving a speech or writing a report. Thus, it can sound a bit awkward when used in casual conversation or in informal situations.
• 정부는 새로운 일자리를 창줄하고자 열심히 노력하고 있습니다.
The government is working hard to create new jobs.
• 부모님께 드리고자 이 물건을 구입했습니다.
I bought this item to give to my parents.
• 두 나라는 좋은 관계를 유지하고자 새로운 조약을 맺었습니 다.
The two countries signed an agreement to maintain good relations.
1. The subject of both the preceding and following clauses must be the same when using this expression.
• 나는 취직하고자 동생이 열심히 공부를 했습니다. (X)
->나는 취직하고자 열심히 공부를 했습니다. (〇)
2. The forms -았/었- and -겠- for expressing the past and future, respectively, cannot be used together with -고자.
• 내일까지 그 일을 끝냈고자 열심히 일했다. (X)
내일까지 그 일을 끝내겠고자 열심히 일했다. (X)
->내일까지 그 일을 끝내고자 열심히 일했다. (〇)
3. The form -고자 하다 expresses the speaker’s intention.
• 이 제품이 지속적으로 좋은 반응을 얻고 있어서 생산량을 늘리고자 합니다.
This product continues to get good reviews, so we plan to increase production.
When used in this form, the negative particles 안 and 못 cannot be inserted.
• 우리는 그 회사와 계약을 하고자 안 합니다. (X)
우리는 그 회사와 계약을 하고자 못 합니다. (X)
->우리는 그 회사와 계약을 안 하고자 합니다. (〇)
->우리는 그 회사와 계약을 하지 않고자 합니다. (〇)
