[Korean grammar] 을/를 비롯해서 Expressing Addition and Inclusion

을/를 비롯해서 is used to indicate that the preceding noun is the first of a series that includes the nouns listed in the following clause. In most cases, the nouns that appear in the following clause represent the same general category as the noun in the preceding clause. It is mainly used in the form 을/를 비롯해 or 을/를 비롯하여 and is used mainly in formal situations or in written language such as newspaper and academic writing.

1. When this expression is used to modify the noun immediately following it, the form 을/를 비롯한 is used.
• 회의에서는 쓰레기 재활용 방안을 비롯한 여러 안건들이 제시되었다.
• 물가 상승으로 인해 우편 요금을 비롯한 공공요금이 오른다고 한다.

2. This expression can be used to list a number of nouns of the same category in the following clause. In this case, however, the form 을/를 비롯한 cannot be used.
• 불고기를 비롯해서 비빔밥, 잡채와 같은 음식은 외국인에게도 인기 있는 한국 음식이다.
• 용산에 가면 TV를 비롯해 냉장고, 전자레 인지 등 각종 전자제품을 싸게 살 수 있다.
