[Korean grammar] N에 ①

친구가 힌국 와요.
My friend is coming to Korea.

동생이 대학교 다녀요.
My little brother goes to school.

다음 달에 고향 돌아가요.
I go back to my hometown next month.

Grammar Focus:
1. 에 is used mainly with the verbs 가다 (to go), 오다 (to come), 다니다 (to attend/commute), 돌아가다 (to return), 도착하다 (to arrive), 올라가다 (to go up), and 내려가다 (to go down). It expresses the direction in which a particular behavior proceeds. It corresponds to ‘to’ in English.


2. 에 is also used with 있다 and 없다 to express the location of a person or thing. It corresponds to ‘in’ or ‘on’ in English.
• 소파 위 강아지가 있어요.
The dog is on the sofa.

• 지금 집 어머니와 동생이 있어요.
Right now my mother and little brother/sister are in the house.

Conversation:
A: 어디 가요? Where are you going?
B: 백화점 가요. I’m going to the department store.

A: 요코 씨가 생일 파티 와요? Is Yoke coming to the birthday party?
B: 아니요, 안 와요. No, she isn’t coming.

A: 오늘 오후 뭐해요? What will you do this afternoon?
B: 서점 가요. I’m going to the bookstore.
