It is used to indicate the preceding noun is the cause or reason of the latter clause. It cannot be used in an imperative or suggestion sentence.
저는 회사 일 때문에 약속을 취소하려고 해요.
I am going to cancel the appointment because of my work at the company.
저는 아까 친구 때문에 화가 났어요.
I was upset earlier because of my friend.
제 친구가 이성 문제 때문에 고민을 하고 있어요.
My friend is agonizing over a girlfriend/boyfriend issue.

밤에 잠을 못 자서 요즘 계속 피곤해요.
These days I am tired all the time because I don’t sleep well at night.
