How to Enjoy Winter Sports Safely?

Skiing, snowboarding, and skating are three of the most popular winter sports. However, they are also the sports that could easily injure your muscles or ligaments or break your ankles or spine when not properly equipped. Let us find out the causes and symptoms of those injuries and how to prevent them.

Cruciate Ligament Injuries: Most Common in Skiing
Cruciate ligament injuries occur from falling on a knee that is bent or twisting your knee as you change directions when skiing downhill.

If a cruciate ligament is severely sprained or torn, it will cause dull pain and restrict a range of movement while you may feel like your knee shifts or slides out of place. It could lead to knee swelling from excessive production of synovial fluid or bleeding. However, many people leave the injury without proper treatment especially when it is partially damaged since the pain is reduced after one to two hours.

If you do not treat cruciate ligament injuries properly, you could further damage knee cartilage and cartilaginous plates and develop degenerative arthritis. If the symptoms are not severe, you may wear a knee support or exercise for strengthening lower extremity strength for recovery.

Spinal or Wrist Injuries from Snowboarding
While skiing has a high risk of injuring knees, the most typical snowboarding injuries are hip or spinal fractures caused by falling on the hip. Wrist joint injuries are also common because snowboarders tend to reach their hand first when they fall.

Even a slight fracture on your hip bone, tailbone, or spine causes a dull pain. You must take an X-ray or MRI to see the degree of your injury. If your wrist or finger is swollen or bruises are found, there is a chance that you have injured the cartilage or fractured bones around your hand. It is important to see a doctor to get diagnosed and get proper treatment.

Ice Skating Injuries: Ankle Sprain or Fracture
An ankle sprain refers to straining or tearing of the ligaments around the ankle bone. Wearing ice skates are the same with wearing high heels; you lose balance and your ankles lose stability while putting a lot of pressure on your feet. If your bruise does not fade away for a long time or suffer from restricted walking due to a swollen ankle or foot, you have most likely sprained your ankle.

Without timely treatment, it can weaken your ankle cartilage and develop ankle instability, a condition of recurring giving way of the ankle. If you have severely twisted and fractured your ankle, you may need a surgery to implant metal into the ankle.

Be Careful with Collision in the Daytime and Cold Temperature in the Nighttime
Ski resorts and ice skating links are the busiest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is when you have to be extra cautious with collision accidents. When the snow or ice melts, it is easy to fall down as you change directions. Falling down on the face or a collision with an object could break your teeth or damage your temporomandibular joints.

In the nighttime, your vision is reduced so is your ability to respond. Moreover, the lower temperature increases a risk of injuring muscles, ligaments, or cartilage in the bones. If you have numbness in the tips of the fingers or toes after being exposed to cold temperatures or you have swollen joints, fever, or severe pain, you must stop exercising immediately.

Stretching for Safety Before Exercising
In order to prevent these injuries, it is important to stretch your body before skiing, snowboarding, or skating so that your muscles and tendons are relaxed and flexible. It is imperative to protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses or goggles that bock UV when enjoying the winter sports.

If injured, the first thing you should do is to move yourself to a safe area. You should call 119 or safety guards for help and stay still until you get help from professionals. If the pain does not fade away after a few days, you should see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis for your symptoms.
