이창동 감독이 신작 ‘가능한 사랑’으로 제83회 베네치아영화제에서 심사위원대상(은사자상)을 품고 돌아왔다. Director Lee Chang-dong has made a triumphant return after winning the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Lion) at this year’s Venice Film Festival for his latest film “Possible Love.”
이 감독은 21일 서울 용산구 CGV 용산아이파크몰에서 열린 언론시사회 및 기자간담회에서 “기쁘고 영광스럽게 생각한다” 면서 “상은 결과물일 뿐, 이 영화가 세상에 나와 관객들과 처음 만났을 때 어떻게 받아들여질지가 훨씬 중요했다”며 은사자상 트로피를 들어보였다.
At a media screening and news conference on Sept. 21 at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul’s Yongsan-gu District, Lee proudly held up his trophy.
“I’m delighted and honored,” he said. “The award is just the result; what was far more important was how this film would be received after its release and the audience’s first impressions.”
이어 “쉽고 자극적인 영화가 아닌데도 관객들이 영화가 던지는 질문과 이야기하려는 바를 느끼고 반응해주는 것이 표정과 태도에서 느껴져 정말 다행이고 기뻤다”고 덧댔다.
“It’s not an easy or provocative film, but I felt truly relieved and happy to see—through their expressions and demeanor—that the audience engaged with the questions the movie raises and the message it wants to convey.”
이날 기자간담회에는 이 감독을 비롯해 배우 설경구, 조인성, 조여정이 참석했다. 미국 뉴욕에서 연극 ‘벚꽃동산’ 공연 중인 전도연은 화상으로 함께했다.
Lee and his cast Sol Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong attended the event. Actor Jeon Do-yeon, who is performing in the play “The Cherry Orchard” in New York, joined via videoconference.
조인성은 베네치아영화제에서 화제가 됐던 외신기자들의 이 감독 친필 사인 요청 해프닝을 전했다. 그는 “공식 기자회견이라 엄숙한 분위기였는데 외신기자들이 단상으로 몰려들어 당황했다”고 말했다. 그러면서 “올해 제가 운 좋게 칸영화제도 다녀왔고 베네치아도 다녀왔는데 칸에서는 느끼지 못했던 풍경이었다”고 돌이켰다. 그는 “이 감독과 한국영화의 위상을 베네치아에서도 확인해 반갑고 감사했다” 는 소회를 밝혔다.
Zo recalled an incident that grew into a hot topic at the Venice festival when foreign reporters asked for Lee’s autograph.
“It was an official news conference so the atmosphere was solemn, but I was taken aback when foreign correspondents flocked to the podium,” Zo said. “This year, I was lucky enough to attend both the Cannes Film Festival and Venice, but I didn’t experience this scene at Cannes.”
“I was delighted and grateful to see director Lee and the prestige of Korean films recognized in Venice.”
‘가능한 사랑’은 해고 노동자와 계급 갈등을 축으로 인간관계와 자본, 영화를 만드는 사람의 윤리와 태도에 질문을 던진다. “Possible Love” uses laid-off workers and class conflict as its central themes to evoke questions on human relationships, capital, and the ethics and attitudes of filmmakers.
대기업에서 정리해고된 호석(설경구)과 아내 미옥(전도연), 이들 부부를 인터뷰하며 다큐멘터리를 만드는 감독 예지(조여정)와 부유한 남편 상우(조인성)는 서로 다른 결핍과 욕망을 품은 채 상대의 삶을 탐한다. 특히 영화 속 예지는 남편 상우의 자본에서 독립하고자 하지만 완전히 자유로울 수 없는 인물로 그려진다.
Ho-seok (played by Sol), who recently got laid off from a corporation, and his wife Mi-ok (Jeon) cross paths with Ye-ji (Cho), a director who interviews the couple for a documentary she is making, and her wealthy husband Sang-woo (Zo). Each harbors unmet needs and desires and covet the other’s life. Ye-ji is portrayed as seeking independence from her husband’s wealth but cannot break free.
이 감독은 “어떻게 보면 영화감독으로서 저도 자본과 결혼하고 사는 삶인지 모르겠다” 며 “자본의 도움 없이는 자기 이야기를 할 수 없는 창작자의 굴레 속에서도 타인의 고통을 단순한 재료로 착취하지 않고 진실되게 사랑하는 것이 과연 가능한가 묻고 싶었다”고 연출 의도를 설명했다.
“I wonder if as a film director, I’m also living a life where I’m also married to capital,” Lee said. “I wanted to ask if it’s truly possible—even within the constraints faced by creators who cannot tell their stories without capital—to genuinely love others instead of exploiting their suffering as mere material.”
배우들은 서로 다른 환경에 놓인 인물을 연기하며 자본과 계급에 영향을 받는 방식을 고민했다고 털어놨다. The actors said that in portraying characters with different circumstances, they reflected on how capital and class influenced them.
설경구는 호석을 두고 “자아가 완전히 깨진 상태에서 수치심과 죄책감, 분노, 열등감 등 복합적인 감정을 가졌을 것” 이라며 “경제적으로 여유로운 상우 부부를 만나면서 느끼는 위축감과 거부감을 염두에 뒀다”고 했다.
“With his sense of self completely shattered, he likely harbored a complex mix of emotions like shame, guilt, anger and an inferiority complex,” Sol said about his character.
“I kept in mind the sense of intimidation and aversion he felt when meeting the affluent Sang-woo and his wife.”
전도연은 “돈과 계급은 사람의 가치관을 무너뜨리고 그 사람의 가치를 앗아갈 수도 있다” 며 “미옥은 그로부터 자신의 가치와 가족을 지켜내려는 인물”이라고 짚었다.
“Money and social class can undermine a person’s values and strip them of their self-worth,” Jeon added. “Mi-ok is someone who strives to protect her own worth and her family from that.”
이 감독은 관객과의 만남을 앞두고 “영화를 결국 완성시키는 것은 관객이라고 생각한다. 관객들 속에서 우리 영화가 좀 더 힘 있고 의미 있게 살아갈 수 있었으면 좋겠다” 는 말을 잊지 않았다.
“I believe that the audience is what ultimately completes a film,” the director said ahead of his work’s premiere. “I hope that our movie can live on with even greater strength and meaning among its viewers.”
‘가능한 사랑’은 오는 11월 6일 넷플릭스(Netflix)로 전 세계 시청자를 찾아간다. Netflix will release “Possible Love” worldwide on Nov. 6.
