Today we are going to talk with Master Kim, Chang-jong, a human cultural asset. How did you end up making traditional musical instruments?
대대로 하던 가업을 물려받았지요. 제가 5대째 가야금을 만들고 있습니다.
I inherited my family business which has been done from generation to generation. I’ve been making gayageum as the fifth generation.
하나의 가야금을 만드는 데 6개월에서 1년 정도 걸린다고 들었습니다.
I heard that it takes six months to a year to make a single gayageum.
네, 전 과정이 수작업이니까요. 시간이 오래 걸리는 한이 있더라도 완벽한 악기를 제작해야지요.
Yes, it’s because the whole process is manual. No matter how long it takes, I should make a perfect instrument.
