V + 을/ㄹ 것까지는 없지만
V + 을/ㄹ 것까지는 없지만 is used to indicate that the act of the preceding clause is not necessary, but at least the act of the following clause must be done.
If the stem of an action verb ends with a vowel or ‘ㄹ’, you use ‘-ㄹ 것까지는 없지만’, with another consonant, you use ‘-을 것까지는 없지만’.
가: 이번 토요일에 등산하러 갈 때 등산화를 신어야 해?
Do I have to wear my hiking boots when I go hiking this Saturday?
나: 우리가 가는 산은 등산로가 잘 갖춰져 있어서 등산화를 신을 것까지는 없지만 편한 운동화 정도는 신고 와야 돼.
The mountain we go to is well-equipped with hiking trails, so you don’t have to wear hiking boots, but you at least have to wear comfortable sneakers.
어머니 생신에 비싼 선물을 사 드릴 것까지는 없지만 가족들이 모여서 저녁이라도 한 끼 먹어야지.
We don’t have to buy expensive gifts for Mother’s birthday, but our family should get together and have dinner.
여자 친구가 마음대로 행동한다고 해서 헤어질 것까지는 없지만 여자 친구하고 진지하게 얘기해 볼 필요가 있을 것 같아요.
