‘춘백양(春白羊) 추내장(秋內藏)’이라는 말이 있다. ‘추내장’은 내장산을 두고 하는 말이다. 내장산은 아름답다. 그러나 가을의 내장산은 더 아름답다. ‘산 안에 숨겨진 보물이 무궁무진하다’하여 ‘내장’이라는 이름을 붙일 만큼 내장산은 예로부터 가을 단풍이 아름다워 한국을 대표하는 8경 중 하나로 꼽혔다.
The Korean saying “Chunbaegyang chunaejang” means “Visit Baegyangsa Temple in spring and Naejangsan Mountain in fall.” The mountain in Jeollabuk-do Province is a beautiful spectacle to behold but even more so in fall. A longtime selection as one of the nation’s top eight scenic spots thanks to its gorgeous fall foliage, Naejangsan got its name meaning “a mountain containing countless hidden treasures.”
지난 26일 코리아넷은 조금 이른 시기에 내장산국립공원을 찾았다. 도착해 보니 단풍 절정이 지난 설악산이나 지리산에 비해 내장산의 단풍들은 이제야 조금씩 물들어 가고 있었다. 가을철 가장 늦게까지 단풍을 감상할 수 있는 내장산은 힘을 들여 등산하지 않아도 가을 단풍의 아름다움을 충분히 만끽할 수 있었다. 코리아넷은 이날 자연사랑길~우화정~전망대~단풍터널~내장사~원적골 자연산책로를 차례로 걸어봤다.
A Korea.net staff writer on Oct. 26 visited Naejangsan National Park a little early in the fall. While fall foliage had peaked on Seoraksan Mountain in Gangwon-do Province and Jirisan Mountain in Gyeongsangnam-do Province, that on Naejangsan had just started.
Visitors can enjoy fall leaves through late fall without climbing the mountain. The writer that day walked the Nature Observation Trail, Uhwajeong Pavilion, the mountain’s observatory, a tunnel of multicolored fall leaves, Naejangsa Temple, and Wonjeokgol Nature Trail in that order.
▣ 내장산의 시작, 자연사랑길과 우화정 – Naejangsan’s starting point: Nature Observation Trail and Uhwajeong Pavilion
자연사랑길은 남녀노소 누구나 편하게 삼림욕을 즐기면서 단풍을 구경하도록 조성된 산책길이다. 2.6km로 약 40분의 탐방 시간이 소요된다. 내장산국립공원으로 진입하는 금선교에서 시작해 우화정까지 이어지는 코스다.
Nature Observation Trail is for all ages to enjoy a therapeutic walk while seeing trees and fall foliage. Measuring 2.6 km in length and taking about 40 minutes to complete, the path starts from Geumseongyo Bridge leads to Naejangsan National Park, and ends at Uhwajeong Pavilion.
자연사랑길 입구에서 케이블카를 탈 수 있는 내장산탐방안내소까지 구간 내 별도로 운영하는 셔틀버스가 있지만, 조금이라도 빨리 단풍을 구경하고 싶다면 이곳 산책길을 걸어보는 것을 추천한다. 걷다 보니 자생식물관찰원, 생태 해설판 등 자연에 가까이 다가갈 수 있도록 만든 시설들을 만날 수 있었다.
A shuttle bus takes visitors from the trail’s entrance to Nature Observation Trail and the information center, where riding a cable car is available. But to enjoy fall leaves more quickly, walking on the trail is recommended. The Korea.net writer while on the path saw facilities for growing closer to nature like a wild plant observation center and ecological information signboards.
자연사랑길의 막바지에 다다를 때쯤, 내장산국립공원의 대표적인 기념 촬영 장소인 우화정이 보였다. 우화정은 과거 콘크리트 구조물이었으나 2016년 팔각지붕 형태의 한옥 정자로 재건축해 내장산의 아름다운 명소로 탄생됐다. 맑은 호수 위로 붉게 물든 단풍과 고즈넉한 정자가 비춰진 풍경은 한 폭의 수채화를 보는 것 같았다.
The trail ended at Uhwajeong Pavilion, the park’s leading photo spot. The pavilion was once made of concrete but was rebuilt in 2016 as a Hanok (traditional architecture) with an octagonal roof, making it a leading attraction around the mountain. The reflection of red fall leaves and the tranquil pavilion on the clear lake looked like a vivid watercolor painting.
▣ 내장사로 통하는 산책길, 108단풍터널길 – The path leading to Naejangsa Temple: 108 Fall Foliage Tunnel
우화정에서 멀지 않은 곳에 있는 내장산탐방안내소에서 조금 더 걸어가면 일주문이 보인다. 그 뒤로 이어진 길이 바로 유명한 내장산 ‘단풍터널’이다. 108그루의 단풍나무가 터널처럼 우거져 이룬 길이라 하여 108단풍터널길이라고도 불린다. 내장산 원적골 자연관찰로를 진입하기 전 일주문에서 사찰 내장사까지 이어지는 비교적 짧은 산책 코스다.
Not far from Uhwajeong is the visitor information center, and just a little further is Iljumun Gate. The path behind the gate is a tunnel famous for enchanting fall foliage. The 108 Danpung (Fall Foliage) Tunnel got its name from its resemblance to a tunnel formed by 108 fall leaf trees. The short trail that begins from Iljumun Gate connects to Naejangsa Temple before leading to the nature observation trail Wonjeokgol on the mountain.
해마다 가을철이면 붉은빛이 곱게 물든 단풍을 구경하기 위한 관람객들로 단풍터널은 인산인해를 이룬다. 이날은 아직 본격적인 단풍 절정이 시작되기 전이라 관람객들이 많지 않았다. 덕분에 여유롭게 산책을 즐길 수 있었다. 걷다 보니 어느덧 내장사 앞에 도착했다. 경쾌한 목탁 소리와 함께 스님들이 불경을 읊는 소리가 들려왔다.
Tourists flock to the tunnel every fall to see the beautifully red-colored leaves. On Oct. 26, however, fewer visitors were seen as it was still a little too early for the peak of the fall foliage season there. This fortunately allowed a more leisurely stroll for the Korea.net staff writer, who arrived in front of the temple and heard the cheerful sounds of a moktak, a wooden handbell often used in Buddhist ceremonies, and Buddhist monks reading Buddhist sutras out loud.
▣ 물길 따라, 새소리 따라, 원적골 자연관찰로 – Following the water trail and bird sounds to the nature observation trail Wonjeokgol
내장사를 지나면 곧바로 원적골 자연관찰로가 펼쳐진다. 한국 국립공원 중 최초로 조성한 3.9km 길이의 자연관찰로이다. 내장산국립공원에서 추천하는 서래봉 코스, 백양사 종주 코스 등 10개 탐방 코스 중 경사가 가장 완만하고 평지가 많아 어린이나 노약자들도 편하게 다닐 수 있는 내장산의 대표적인 코스이기도 하다. 힘들게 등산하지 않아도 산 속 풍경을 두루 관찰할 수 있으니, 이보다 좋을 순 없다.
Pass the temple to reach the 3.9 km-long nature observation trail Wonjeokgol, the first of its kind at a domestic national park. The road has the most gentle slope among the 10 courses at Naejangsan National Park recommended by park staff including those for Seoraebong Peak and Baegyangsa Temple and many flat areas, so children and the elderly can walk there comfortably.
원적골 자연관찰로의 원적골이라는 이름은 암자 원적암에서 유래됐다. 이곳은 까치봉, 연지봉, 망해봉, 불출봉에서 시작한 물줄기가 합쳐져 흐르는 3.2km의 원적계곡을 따라 산책로가 굽이굽이 이어졌다. 완만하게 흐르는 맑은 계곡물을 따라 자연관찰로를 걷다 보면 소쩍새, 오색딱따구리 등이 지저귀는 소리에 저도 모르게 귀를 기울이게 된다.
It gets no better than this since visitors can view the scenery without having to climb the mountain. The term “Wonjeokgol” comes from the Buddhist hermitage Wonjeogam, where the trail winds along the 3.2 km-long Woneok Valley, which flows through streams originating from the peaks Ggachibong, Yeonjibong, Manghaebong and Bulchulbong. Those following the gently flowing and clear valley waters can unconsciously hear the sounds of scops owls and great spotted woodpeckers.
아내와 함께 여행 차 대구에서 내장산을 처음으로 방문한 백종호 씨는 “아직 단풍이 절정을 맞이하지 않았지만, 내장산의 아름다운 풍경에 연신 감탄하고 있다”며 “역시 단풍 구경은 내장산이 최고”라는 소감을 남겼다.
Baek Jong-ho, a resident of Daegu who visited Naejangsan with his wife for his first visit there, said, “Fall foliage here hasn’t peaked yet but I’m constantly amazed by the mountain’s beautiful scenery,” adding, “Naejangsan is definitely the best place to see fall foliage.”
네덜란드에서 친구와 함께 처음으로 한국을 찾은 로리 모나한은 “네델란드는 산이 없다 보니 한국에서 내장산을 구경할 수 있어서 좋았다”며 “산에서 바라본 아름다운 풍경들은 좋은 기억으로 남을 것”이라고 말했다.
Rory Monahan, a Dutch national on his first visit to Korea with a friend, said, “There are no mountains in the Netherlands, so I was glad to explore Naejangsan in Korea,” adding, “The beautiful views I saw from the mountain today will remain as good memories.”
내장산국립공원 탐방시설과에서 10여 년간 근무한 김영 자연환경해설사는 “산에 올라가지 않아도 산책로에서 다양한 색깔의 단풍나무를 구경할 수 있는 것이 내장산의 장점 중 하나”라면서 “내장산은 이름처럼 숨겨진 보물 같은 아름다운 풍경들이 곳곳에 있으니, 이곳에 방문하신 관람객들은 좋은 추억을 많이 만들어 가시길 바란다”고 밝혔다.
Kim Young, who has worked for about a decade as a guide to the mountain’s natural environment, said, “One of the advantages of Naejangsan is that you can see maple trees of various colors on trails without climbing the mountain.” “As its name suggests, Naejangsan is packed with beautiful scenery that are like hidden treasures, so we hope that visitors here can create many good memories.”

# 단풍나무는 내장산의 가을 경관을 이루는 대표적인 수종이다. 내장산국립공원은 한국의 국립공원 중에서 단풍나무 수종을 가장 많이 보유하고 있으며 단풍나무를 비롯해 당단풍, 털참단풍, 고로쇠, 신나무, 복자기 등 13종이 조화를 이룬다.
