봄볕이 따스한 지난 12일, 경복궁 담장을 따라 사부작사부작 걸었다. 셔츠와 청바지에 간편한 차림으로. 누가 봐도 서울 인기명소인 북촌의 갤러리나 예쁜 카페를 거니는 모양새다. 하지만 등산을 하러 나선 길이었다.
On a warm spring day on April 12, I stepped lightly along the walls of Gyeongbokgung Palace wearing a simple shirt and jeans. Everyone might think I was going to a gallery or pretty cafe in Bukchon Hanok Village, a popular area in Seoul, but I was on my way to hike up a mountain.
오전 9시, 목적지에 도착했다. 종로구 삼청동 문화거리 2층 구조의 한 한옥. 이곳은 서울관광재단이 운영하는 ‘서울 도심 등산관광센터 북악산’이다.
At 9 a.m., I arrived at my destination: a two-story Hanok (traditional building) on Samcheong-dong Culture Street. This was the Bugaksan Mountain branch of Seoul Hiking Tourism Center run by Seoul Tourism Organization.
외국인 관광객이 서울 도심에 있는 산을 더욱 편하게 오르며 즐길 수 있도록 돕고자 지난 18일 공식으로 문을 열었다. 2022년 9월 문을 연 ‘서울 도심 등산관광센터 북한산’에 이어 2호점인 셈이다.
The center was officially launched on April 18 to help foreign visitors more comfortably scale the mountain in downtown Seoul. This is the second such branch after the first was opened in September 2022 near Bukhansan Mountain.
이곳에선 외국인 관광객이 다양한 등산 물품을 빌릴 수 있고 가이드가 이끄는 탐방에 참여할 수 있다. 영어, 중국어, 일본어 안내와 등산과 관련된 코스와 정보도 받을 수 있다.
At this place, foreign visitors can rent hiking gear, go on tours led by guides, and get information and courses on mountaineering and guides in English, Chinese and Japanese.
북악산점의 최대 강점은 위치. 경복궁, 북촌한옥마을, 광화문광장 등 북악산 아래 서울의 주요 관광지와 인접해 외국인 관광객이 한국의 역사와 문화, 자연을 한꺼번에 오롯이 느낄 수 있다. 이러한 장점을 살려 센터는 도심에서 가볍게 소풍과 캠핑을 즐길 수 있도록 대여 장비를 다양화할 계획이란다.
The biggest advantage of the new branch is its location near major tourist attractions in Seoul under Bugaksan like Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village and Gwanghwamun Square. This allows foreign visitors to simultaneously experience the nation’s history, culture and nature. Through its strengths, the center plans to diversify rental equipment to those used for light picnics and camping in the city.
이날 올해 첫 답사 여행에 참가한 외국인 등산객은 영어 안내해설을 들으면서 청와대와 북악산을 두루 돌아봤다. 센터에서 무료로 제공한 등산복을 입고 북악산의 빼어난 풍광과 고요함을 만끽했다.
Foreign hikers who went on this year’s first field trip looked all over the former presidential compound of Cheong Wa Dae and Bugaksan while listening to commentary in English. They saw the superb scenery and calm of the mountain while wearing mountain clothes provided by the center free of charge.
학술대회 참석차 인도네시아에서 온 리스카 뒤 아스투티 씨는 “등산복을 챙기지 못했지만 센터에서 등산복을 빌릴 수 있어서 매우 편했다”고 했다. 10여 년 넘게 한국에 거주하는 크리스티안 리 씨는 “관광객에게 등산화를 빌려주는 나라가 한국 말고는 없을 것 같다”라고 거들었다.
Riska Dwi Astuti, an Indonesian who was attending an academic conference in Seoul, said, “I didn’t bring my mountain clothes, so it’s convenient that I can rent them.” Christian Rhee, an expat who has lived in Korea for over 10 years, added, “No other country offers hiking boots for rent except Korea.”
관광객이 아닌 한국에 체류 중인 외국인도 대여 서비스를 이용할 수 있다. 스틱, 백팩, 모자, 바지, 셔츠 등은 2000원이다. 등산화와 재킷은 5000원. Expats can also rent equipment like hiking sticks, backpacks, hats, pants and shirts for KRW 2,000 each and hiking boots and jackets for KRW 5,000.

한편 북악산점은 지난해 11월 20일부터 시범운영 되다 지난 18일 공식 개관됐다. 2층 한옥 라운지에서 개최된 개관식엔 오세훈 서울시장을 비롯해 코스타리카, 벨라루스, 체코 3개국 대사와 외국인 관광객 등 100여 명이 참석했다.
The Bugaksan branch underwent trial operations from Nov. 20 last year before officially opening on April 18 this year. The opening ceremony at Hanok Lounge on the second floor attracted around 100 people including Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, ambassadors from Costa Rica, Belarus and the Czech Republic, and foreign tourists.
오 시장은 체험 관광의 중요성을 강조하면서 “설명을 듣는 것보다도 직접 경험하는 것이 평생 기억에 남는다” 며 “한두 시간 걸어 올라 도심 전부를 조망할 수 있는 곳은 전 세계 어느 도시에도 없다”라고 말했다.
“Instead of hearing an explanation, experiencing this yourself will form lifelong memories,” Mayor Oh said in stressing the importance of experiential tourism. “No other place in the world can you see the whole city center by walking for an hour or two.”
