Jaringobi in Korean refers to a person who is extremely frugal in money or things. The Jaringobi story is about a notorious miser named Joreuk in Korea in the Joseon Dynasty. The story is as the following.

One day, Joreuk bought a yellow corbina. However, it was not for him to eat. He hung it on the ceiling and looked at it once and ate a spoon of rice. Looking at it twice was not allowed for his family members. A man who sells dried pollack wanted to see Joreuk’s reaction, so he threw a dried pollack into the miser’s front door. When the miser saw the dried pollack, he shouted Who is it that is trying to make our family eat more!’ He buried it into the heap of manure.

The miser in this story implies rather a negative view about saving. However, these days. the Korean word jaringobi is used with a positive meaning as referring to an advisable and proper money spending habit such as in jaringobi shopping’ or ‘jaringobi backpacking”
