유럽을 순방 중인 이재명 대통령이 14일(현지 시간) “정전 상태를 넘어 지속 가능한 평화 체제를 구축하기 위해 할 수 있는 모든 것을 다할 생각”이라고 밝혔다.
President Lee Jae Myung, who is on a tour of Europe, on June 14 said, “I intend to do everything within my power to move beyond the (Korean) armistice and build a sustainable peace regime (on the Korean Peninsula).”
이 대통령은 이날 로마 성 바오로 대성당에서 열린 ‘평화와 연대를 위한 특별 미사’에 참석, 기념연설에서 이같이 말했다. 유흥식 추기경이 집전한 미사에서 이 대통령은 분열과 대립이 심화되고 있는 국제사회에 대한민국이 평화와 연대를 향한 희망의 메시지를 보내겠다는 강력한 의지를 피력했다.
He said this in a speech at a special Mass for peace and solidarity at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome officiated by Korean Cardinal Lazarus You Heung-sik.
President Lee expressed his strong determination to deliver a message of peace and solidarity from Korea to a world increasingly marked by division and confrontation.
이어 “남북 간 우발적 충돌을 방지하고, 군사적 신뢰를 회복하기 위한 노력도 꾸준하게 이어가겠다”고 강조했다. 이 대통령은 6·15 남북공동선언 26주년의 의미를 되새기며 선제적 긴장 완화 조치로 남북 대화와 협력의 희망을 이어가겠다고 다짐했다.
“I will also continue steady efforts to prevent accidental military clashes between the two Koreas and restore military trust,” he added.
Mentioning the 26th anniversary this year of the two Koreas’ June 15 Joint Declaration of 2000, he also pledged to sustain hope for inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation through preemptive measures for easing tension.
이 대통령은 한반도 평화를 한결같이 지지해 준 교황청에 사의를 표한 뒤 우리 사회의 시련 극복 과정에서 버팀목이 되어준 한국 가톨릭 교회의 역할을 높이 평가했다.
President Lee thanked the Vatican for its consistent support for inter-Korean peace and praised the role of the Korean Catholic Church as a pillar of support during difficult periods in Korean society.
끝으로 이 대통령은 ‘2027 서울 세계청년대회(WYD)’의 전폭적인 지원을 약속했다. 이 대통령은 “전 세계 청년들이 국경의 제약을 넘어 참여할 수 있도록 정부 차원에서 최선을 다해 뒷받침하겠다”고 약속했다. 이번 대회는 아시아에서 두 번째이자 가톨릭 비다수국으로는 최초로 열린다.
He also pledged his full support for Seoul’s hosting of the 2027 World Youth Day, saying, “My administration will do its best to ensure that young people from around the world can participate without hindrance from national borders.”
Korea will be the second Asian country to host the event as well as the first where Catholicism is not the majority religion.
앞서 이 대통령은 12일(현지 시간) 조르자 멜로니 이탈리아 총리와 취임 후 세 번째 회담을 했다. Earlier on June 12, President Lee attended his third summit with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
이 대통령은 이날 멜로니 총리와 소인수회담을 열고 양국 협력 강화를 위한 양해각서(MOU) 4건을 맺었다. 한·이탈리아 개발 협력, 한·이탈리아 첨단 과학기술·정보통신기술(ICT) 협력, 한·이탈리아 사회연대경제, 한·이탈리아 중소기업 및 소상공인 분야 협력 등이다.
Both leaders held a small group meeting and later signed four memorandums of understanding on reinforcing bilateral cooperation in bilateral development, advanced science and technology and information and communications technology, the social and solidarity economy, and small and medium enterprises and small business owners.
11일(현지 시간)에는 마타렐라 대통령 주최 국빈 만찬에서 최고 등급 훈장인 ‘이탈리아공화국 기사대십자 공로훈장’을 받았다. 이 대통령이 취임 후 외국 정부에서 훈장을 받은 것은 이번이 처음이다. 이 훈장은 과학, 예술, 경제 등 분야에서 공로가 있는 이탈리아 국민과 국가원수급 외국인에게 수여한다.
On June 11, President Lee received the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, Italy’s highest government honor, at a state banquet hosted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella. This was President Lee’s first award from a foreign government since taking office.
The decoration goes to Italians and foreign heads of state who have made notable contributions in fields such as science, arts and economy.
이 대통령은 만찬사에서 “양국 교역이 지속적으로 확대되고 있고 미래 산업에서도 협력 폭을 넓혀가고 있다” 며 “공통 가치와 인식을 바탕으로 앞으로 양국이 국제사회 평화와 번영을 위해 더욱 긴밀히 협력해 나가길 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
“Bilateral trade keeps growing and our scope of cooperation is also broadening in future industries,” President Lee said at the banquet. “Based on shared values and mutual understanding, I look forward to our two countries cooperating more closely for the peace and prosperity of the international community.”
