[Korean grammar] -기가 이를 데 없다 Expressing Emphasis

가: 지난 주말에 ‘명성황후’라는 오페라를 봤는데 배우들의 연기가 훌륭하기가 이를 데 없었어요.
Last weekend, I saw the opera Queen Myeongseong, and the acting was excellent beyond comparison.
나: 그래요? 저도 보고 싶던 공연인데요. 무대 규모도 엄청나다면서요?
Really? I’ve been wanting to see that musical myself. Is it true that the scale of the stage is huge, too?
가: 네. 무대도 웅장하기가 이를 데 없고 배우들의 의상 또한 화려하기가 이를 데 없었어요. 다음 달에는 유럽으로 공연을 간다고 하더라고요.
Yes, the stage is magnificent beyond compare, and the actors’ costumes are more dazzling than you would believe. I heard that they’re leaving to perform in Europe next month.
나: 그럼 저도 이번 달 안에 꼭 보러 가야겠네요.

This expression is used to emphasize the fact that the degree of some state of affairs defies description in terms of being great, immense, or tremendous. Both the forms -기 이를 데가 없다 and -기 이를 데 없다 can be used. It is usually used in written language and is mainly attached to adjectives.

• 그동안 많은 도옴을 주셨는데 이런 일로 폐를 끼치게 되어 죄송스럽기가 이를 데 없네요.
You’ve helped us out so much already, so I’m extremely sorry for inconveniencing you regarding this kind of matter.

• 여러 나라 사람들이 모여 사는 도시답게 식당에서 파는 음식들도 다양하기 이를 데가 없었다.
Just as people from all over the world come to live in the big city, the dishes for sale at the restaurants are incredibly varied.

• 지켜보는 관중 하나 없는 경기장은 쓸쓸하기 이를 데 없었지만 선수들은 최선을 다해 경기에 임했다.
The stadium was the epitome of loneliness without a spectator in sight, but the players did their best at the match.

1. This expression can be replaced with -기가 그지없다 with no major change in meaning.
• 그동안 많은 도움을 주셨는데 이런 일로 폐를 끼치게 되어 죄송스럽기가 그지 없네요.
• 여러 나라 사람들이 모여 사는 도시답게 식당에서 파는 음식들도 다양하기가 그지 없었다.

2. This expression is similar to the expression -기 짝이 없다, which is used to emphasize situations in which something has no comparison in terms of its level or degree of greatness or magnitude. It is better not to use ‘-기 짝이 없다’ in situations that require modesty or in which the person being described is older or socially superior to the speaker.
• 초등학교 때 쓴 일기를 보니 유치하기 짝이 없네요.
• 그날 가르치는 학생들 앞에서 실수했던 것을 생각하면 부끄럽기 짝이 없다.
