[Korean grammar] -(으)ㄴ/는 대신에 Expressing Choice

가: 마크 씨, 점심 때 스테이크 먹을까요?
Mark, shall we have steak for dinner?
나: 오늘은 돈이 없는데 스테이크 대신에 햄버거를 먹으면 어때요?
I’m broke today, so how about we have hamburgers instead of steak?

가: 날씨가 더우니까 안경이 불편하네요.
It’s uncomfortable wearing glasses because of the heat.
나: 그럼, 안경을 쓰는 대신에 렌즈를 껴 보세요.
In that case, wear your contact lenses instead of your glasses.

This expression indicates that the action in the preceding clause can either be replaced by another action or that another action can compensate for the action in the preceding clause. The particle 에 can be deleted, in which case the form becomes 대신.

가: 이 가방은 정말 비싸네요.
This bag is really expensive.
나: 비싸긴 하지만 비싼 대신에 품질이 좋잖아요.
It is expensive, but (wouldn’t you agree) the quality is good.

가: 마크 씨, 제가 한국어 숙제를 도와줄까요?
Mark, would you like me to help you with your Korean homework?
나: 정말이요? 그럼 수진 씨가 제 숙제를 도와주는 대신 제가 저녁을 살게요.
Really? Well, if you (Sujin) help me with my homework, I’ll buy dinner in return.

가: 커피 드시겠어요?
Would you like some coffee?
나: 커피를 마시면 잠이 안와서요. 커피 대신 녹차를 주시겠어요?
I won’t be able to sleep if I drink coffee. Can I get some green tea instead?

This expression is used in the same form, -는 대신에 even when referring to something done in the past.
• 어제는 집에서 요리한 대신 밖에 나가서 외식을 했어요. (X)
->어제는 집에서 요리하는 대신 밖에 나가서 외식을 했어요. (〇)
