What do people do on (Korean) New Year’s Day?
(Korean) New Year, which is a major holiday in Korea, is the first day of the first lunar month. Family members and relatives who live separately all gather at someone’s house. In the morning of the New Year’s Day, Koreans perform an ancestral worship ceremony and eat rice cakes. They also wear a traditional Korean outfit (hanbok), and bow to senior family members. Then, elders will give blessings. Family members enjoy spending time together playing board games.

What do you do on Seollal and Chuseok? 

Seollal and Chuseok are two representative Korean festive holidays. On Seollal and Chuseok, Korean people perform commemorative rites for ancestors, and family members gather together to eat delicious food and have a good time. On Seollal (January 1st, lunar calendar), children perform deep bows to adults. Then, adults will give words of blessing and sometimes also give pocket money.
On Seollal, Korean people eat tteokkuk, it is said that if one eats tteokkuk, one will come one year older. Chuseok (August 15th, lunar calendar) is also called “Hankawi”. On Chuseok, Korean people perform commemorative rites for ancestors and eat songpyeon. At night, they make a wish as they look at the full moon.
