옛날 어떤 오누이가 살고 있었다. 오누이의 엄마는 오누이만 남겨두고 마을 잔칫집에 떡을 팔러 간다. 그런데 엄마는 돌아오는 길에 무서운 호랑이를 만나게 된다. 호랑이는 엄마에게 ‘떡 하나 주면 안 잡아 먹지~’라고 말한다. 하지만 결국 호랑이는 엄마의 떡도 다 먹고, 엄마도 잡아먹는다.

The tiger said to mother. “If you give me a piece of rice cake, I will not kill you.” But the tiger ate both of the rice cake and mother anyway.
그 후 오누이 집을 찾아 온 호랑이는 자신이 엄마라고 속이며 문을 열어달라고 한다. 이때 오빠가 호랑이의 꼬리를 보고 엄마가 아니라는 것을 알게 된다. 무서움에 벌벌 떨던 오누이는 호랑이를 피해 나무 위로 도망간다. 나무 위에 있는 오누이를 보고 호랑이도 나무에 오르게 된다. 호랑이가 나무에 오르는 동안 오누이는 하늘에게 도와달라고 말한다.

곧 하늘에서 동아줄이 내려와서 오누이는 그 줄을 타고 하늘로 올라간다. 뒤이어 나무에 오른 호랑이도 동아줄을 내려달라고 하늘에 말한다. 호랑이에게도 하늘에서 동아 줄을 내려 주었지만 썩은 동아줄이었다. 결국 호랑이는 썩은 동아줄을 타고 올라가다 끊어져서 죽는다. 하늘에 올라간 오빠는 달님이 되고, 밤을 무서워하는 동생은 해넘이 되었다.
