V/A+ 는데/은데/ㄴ데 V/A+ 는다고요/ㄴ다고요/다고요?

It is used to check the other person’s words with surprise because they are different from what is expected in a given situation.

For ‘-는데/은데/ㄴ데’, after the stem of an action verb or after the stem of ‘있다’, ‘없다’, you use ‘-는데’. If the stem of a descriptive verb ends with a vowel or ‘ㄹ’, you use ‘-ㄴ데’, with another consonant you use ‘-은데’.

For ‘-는다고요/ㄴ다고요/다고요?’, if the stem of an action verb ends with a consonant you use ‘-는다고요?’, with a vowel you use ‘-ㄴ다고요?’, and after the stem of a descriptive verb you use ‘-다고요?’.

가: 고향에 계신 부모님께 드릴 선물을 안 사도 되겠지요?
I don’t have to buy gifts for my parents back home, do I?
나: 고향에 가는데 빈손으로 간다고요?
Are you saying you are going home empty-handed?

가: 출출한데 치킨을 먹어야겠다.
I’m hungry, I have to eat chicken.
나: 지금 밤 12시가 넘었는데 치킨을 먹는다고?
It’s past 12 am, and you are to eat chicken?

가: 월요일이라서 그런지 너무 피곤하다.
I feel so tired, maybe it’s because it is Monday.
나: 주말 내내 잠만 잤는데 또 피곤하다고요?
You slept for the whole weekend and you are tired again?

Conversation:

누구하고 그렇게 길게 통화했어?
Who did you talk to so long?

여자 친구랑. 여자 친구가 잠이 안 온다고 해서 통화가 길어졌어.
I talked to my girlfriend. The call took longer because she said she couldn’t get sleep.

여자 친구? 너 여자 친구 없잖아.
Girlfriend? You don’t have a girlfriend.

그제 소개팅해서 만난 사람이랑 사귀기로 해서 이제 사귄 지 사흘 됐어.
I decided to date the whom I met on a blind date the day before yesterday, and it’s been three days now.

뭐? 그저께 처음 만났는데 벌써 사귄다고?
What? You met her for the first time the day before yesterday, and you are already in a relationship?

응, 보자마자 첫눈에 반해서 내가 먼저 사귀자고 했어.
Yes, I fell in love with her at first sight and asked her to go out with me first.

엄청 예쁜가 보네. 어떤 사람인데?
She must be very pretty. What kind of person she is?

나랑 대화가 통하는 사람이랄까? 아직 서로 알아 가는 단계야.
I would say she’s the one I can talk to. We’re still in the process of getting to know each other.
