2022년 광화문 광장 재개장부터 2023년 광화문 월대 복원까지. 문화재청은 국내외 관람객이 한국의 전통문화를 다채롭게 보고 즐길 수 있도록 각종 행사를 선보이고 있다. 그중 하나가 바로 ‘수문장 순라의식’. 조선시대 도성과 궁궐을 수호하던 순라군의 순찰을 재현한 행사다. 지난달 30일 근엄하고 엄숙한 분위기 속에서 펼쳐진 행사 현장을 코리아넷 기자들이 순라군과 함께 걸어보았다.
The Cultural Heritage Administration has held festivals of traditional Korean culture for both domestic and foreign visitors such as the 2022 reopening of Gwanghwamun Square and last year’s opening of a restored woldae (ceremonial elevated stage) in front of Gwanghwamun Gate. One such event is the Gyeongbokgung Palace Sumunjang Patrol Ceremony, a reenactment of royal guards of the Joseon Dynasty patrolling the capital and Gyeongbokgung. Under a solemn and dignified atmosphere on March 30, two Korea.net staff writers experienced the event by walking with the guards.
‘수문장 순라의식’은 순라군, 수문장, 종사관, 갑사 등 60여 명의 조선시대 군사들이 광화문 월대에서 도열하면서 시작한다. 순라는 조선시대 도둑이 침입하는 것을 막고 화재 등을 예방하기 위해 밤에 궁중과 도성 둘레를 순시하던 순찰 제도다. 조선시대 군사 복장을 한 무리가 줄지어 광화문을 나온다. 지나가던 관광객들도 일제히 발걸음을 멈추고 이들이 향하는 곳으로 눈길을 돌린다.
The Gyeongbokgung Palace Sumunjang Patrol Ceremony began at the woldae (elevated ceremonial stage) of Gwanghwamun Gate in Seoul’s Jongno-gu District with around 60 military personnel from the Joseon Dynasty: royal guards; sumunjang (chief gatekeeper); jongsagwan, who assists the sumunjang and manages the list of entrants; and gapsa, elite soldiers who were traditionally selected through testing. Back then, sulla referred to a patrol system guarding the palace and city walls at night to prevent theives from entering and fire. A group dressed in Joseon military attire marched out of Gwanghwamun in formation. As they passed, tourists stopped to see where the group was heading.
군사들이 도열을 마치면 취타대가 풍악을 울려 순라의식의 시작을 알린다. 풍악 소리를 신호로 군사들은 의장기를 높게 쳐들고 열을 맞춰 걷기 시작한다. 월대를 나온 군사들이 도열의 우두머리에 있는 수문장을 따라 인사동 방면으로 향한다. 수문장은 광화문, 흥인지문 등 도성과 궁궐을 지키던 책임자. 종사관은 수문장을 보좌하고 관청의 업무를 맡아 수행하는 관직이었다.
Once the soldiers were in formation, the traditional military band chwitadae band banged a drum to announce the beginning of the ceremony. To the beat of the drum, they hoisted their weapons high and marched in unison. The soldiers left the woldae and followed the lead of the sumunjang at the head of the formation, heading toward Seoul’s Insa-dong neighborhood.
The sumunjang was in charge of protecting the capital and palaces including places like the gates of Gwanghwamun and Heunginjimun. A jongsagwan was a public official who assisted the sumunjang and handled the administrative duties of the government office.
열린송현녹지광장에 들어서자 취타대가 나발, 태평소, 용고 등 조선시대에 사용하던 관악기와 타악기로 아리랑을 흥겹게 연주한다. 전통악기 선율을 들으니 마치 조선시대로 돌아간 듯한 착각 속에 빠져든다. 뒤따르던 관광객들도 장관을 놓칠세라 각자 휴대 전화를 서둘러 꺼내더니 사진과 영상으로 담느라 분주하다.
As the march entered Open Songhyeon Green Plaza, the chwitadae played a lively rendition of the folk song “Arirang” using traditional wind and percussion instruments from the Joseon period like the nabal (traditional brass horn), taepyeongso (double-reed wind instrument) and yonggo (barrel drum). Listening to the melody of such instruments felt like going back in time to that era. Tourists who followed the march hurriedly took out their smartphones to snap photos and videos and capture the spectacle.
횡단보도에 빨간불이 켜졌다. 군사들 행진도 멈췄다. 그 덕에 관광객들이 화려한 머리 장식과 형형색색의 의상을 입은 취타수와 순라군의 모습을 가까이 다가가 살핀다. 군사들의 의상과 표정에서 나오는 무게감이 서울 도심 한복판을 장악했다.
The traffic light at the crosswalk turned red, causing the march to stop. This allowed tourists to approach and see the chwitadae and royal guards, who were wearing elaborate headpieces and colorful attire. The atmosphere emanating from the soldiers’ attire and expressions took over central Seoul.
마침내 수문장 순라의식 행군의 눈대목인 인사동 쌈지길에 도착했다. 취타대 소리에 지나가던 관광객들이 양옆으로 길을 터준다. 연신 울리는 카메라 셔터음과 함께 쇼핑을 즐기던 외국인들도 발걸음을 멈추고 호기심 어린 눈길을 보낸다. 수문장을 선두로 휘날리는 수장기(수문부대를 표시하는 깃발)와 순시기(순라 중임을 알리는 깃발)가 주는 위엄에 압도된 모습이다.
Finally, the march arrived on Ssamzigil Street of Insa-dong, the starting point of the sumunjang’s march. As the drums sounded, tourists stepped aside. Amid the constant sound of camera shutters, foreign visitors shopping paused to look with curious eyes.
At the forefront and fluttering proudly ahead of the procession led by a flag representing the patrol unit and another indicating the soldiers’ march, overwhelming the scene with their imposing presence.
“한식을 먹으러 인사동에 왔다가 순라행진과 마주친 순간 사극 드라마의 한 장면 속으로 들어온 느낌” 이라며 “한마디로 ‘컬러풀’ 한 광경이었다”고 독일에서 온 관광객 로라가 소감을 말한다.
German tourist Laura said she was in Insa-dong to eat Korean food but after seeing the march, it was like stepping into a scene of a historical drama. In a word, she described it as “colorful.”
캐나다에서 온 샤햐드 사하도 “정말 멋지고 사람들이 달려가서 사진을 찍으려고 했던 광경이 기억에 남는다”고 거든다. 그러면서 “순라의식 행사 뿐만 아니라 실제로 조선시대때 사람들이 먹었던 전통음식을 먹어보는 체험이 있었으면 좋겠다”고 덧붙인다.
Seeing people rushing to take photos was truly impressive and memorable, Canadian visitor Shahad Sahar said, adding that he hoped to eat traditional food from the Joseon era, not just experience the ceremony.
이태행 한국문화재재단 궁궐사업팀 파트장은 “광화문광장 재개장에 이어 복원된 광화문 월대의 가치를 알리기 위해 순라의식의 시작점을 월대로 정했다” 면서 “궁궐 내에서만 보던 수문장을 인사동 한복판에 등장시켜 시민에게 신선함과 의외성을 전달하고 싶었다”고 말했다.
“Following the reopening of Gwanghwamun Square, we designated the woldae in front of Gwanghwamun Gate as the starting point of the march to promote the woldae’s value,” said Lee Tae-Haeng, general manager of the Royal Palace Project Team under the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation.
“We wanted the sumunjang, who was normally seen only within the palace, to appear in the middle of Insa-dong to convey a sense of freshness and surprise to the public.”
‘수문장 순라의식’ 행사 정보 – Information on Palace Royal Guard Patrol Ceremony
# ‘수문장 순라의식’은 올해 12월 29일까지 매주 토·일요일과 공휴일 오후 3시부터 4시까지 약 한 시간 동안 진행한다. Through Dec. 29, the hourlong event is held on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
# 행진 경로는 광화문 앞 월대 도열 → 인사동으로 행진 → 관람객과 기념사진 촬영 → 광화문 월대 복귀다. The march route starts at the woldae in front of Gwanghwamun Gate, goes through Insa-dong, where spectators can take photos, and returns to the woldae.
# 행사 중간 북인사 마당 광장(안국역 6번 출구)에서 10여 분가량 순라군과 함께 사진을 찍을 수 있는 촬영시간이 있다. The middle of the event has a photo session for 10 minutes at Bukinsa Madang Square (Exit 6 of Anguk Station), where people can take photos with the guards.
