소설가 한강의 ‘작별하지 않는다'(We Do Not Part)가 미국 전미도서비평가협회(NBCC) ‘2025 소설 부문’ 수상작으로 선정됐다.
Novelist Han Kang has won the National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Award for fiction for her book We Do Not Part.
NBCC는 26일(현지 시간) 미국 뉴욕에서 열린 시상식에서 이예원, 페이지 모리스가 공동으로 번역한 ‘작별하지 않는다(We Do Not Part)’를 수상작으로 발표했다.
The NBCC on March 26 announced the book, jointly translated by E. Yaewon and Paige Aniyah Morris, as the winner at its awards ceremony in New York.
소설 부문에서 한국 작가의 작품이 수상한 것은 이번이 처음이다. 앞서 김혜순 시인의 ‘날개 환상통(Phantom Pain Wings)’이 ‘2023 전미도서비평가협회상’ 시 부문을 2024년 수상한 바 있다.
Han is the first Korean to win the NBCC Award in the fiction category.
Previously, poet Kim Hye-soon won the poetry award in 2024 for Phantom Pain Wings.
NBCC는 작품 ‘작별하지 않는다’를 두고 “제주 4·3 사건의 여파가 남긴 트라우마를 섬세하게 그려냈다”며 “상실 속에서 창조와 진실에 천착한 고찰”이라고 평했다. 그러면서 “이 예술적인 소설은 묘한 분위기를 자아내며 압도적인 꿈처럼 긴 여운을 남긴다”는 찬사를 덧붙였다.
Heather Scott Partington, chair of the NBCC fiction committee, described the novel as “a subtly rendered sketch of trauma in the wake of the Jeju massacre — a rumination on creation and truth amidst loss.”
She added, “This artful novel lingers like an atmospheric, arresting dream.”
제주 4·3 사건의 비극과 인간의 고통을 세 여성의 시선을 통해 그려낸 ‘작별하지 않는다’는 영어와 프랑스어 등 13개 언어로 번역·출간됐다. 이 과정은 한국문학번역원의 체계적인 지원으로 이뤄졌다.
The novel depicts the tragedy and human suffering of the Jeju massacre through the perspectives of three women.
It has been translated into 13 languages including English and French, with support from the Literature Translation Institute of Korea.
전수용 한국문학번역원장은 “이번 수상 소식은 한국문학의 탁월한 예술성이 세계 무대에서 다시 한번 증명된 뜻깊은 쾌거”라고 밝혔다.
LTI Korea Director Chon Sooyoung said the award “proves once again the outstanding artistic merit of Korean literature on the global stage.”
NBCC는 언론과 출판계의 도서평론가들이 설립한 비영리 단체다. 1975년부터 영어로 출간된 도서 가운데 소설(Fiction), 비소설(Nonfiction), 전기(Biography), 자서전(Autobiography), 시(Poetry), 비평(Criticism) 등 6개 부문에서 매년 ‘최고의 책’을 선정해 시상하고 있다.
The NBCC is a nonprofit organization founded by book critics in media and publishing.
Since 1975, it has awarded the best books published in English in six categories: fiction, nonfiction, biography, autobiography, poetry and criticism.
한편 지난 1월 한스 크리스티안 안데르센상 글 부문 최종 후보로 선정된 이금이 작가를 향한 기대도 높아지고 있다. 이금이는 지난 2024년에 이어 올해 두 번째로 최종 후보에 올랐다. 수상자는 오는 4월 13일 이탈리아 볼로냐에서 열리는 볼로냐 국제아동도서전에서 발표된다.
Anticipation is also rising for Lee Geum-yi, who was shortlisted for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in January.
This marks her second nomination following 2024, and the winner will be announced on April 13 at the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair in Italy.
안데르센상은 국제아동청소년도서협의회(IBBY)가 주관하는 아동문학계 최고 권위의 상이다. 2년마다 전 세계에서 글·그림 부문 각 1명씩만 선정해 희소성이 높다. 한국은 지난 2022년 이수지 작가가 그림 부문에서 상을 받았다.
The Hans Christian Andersen Award, organized by the International Board on Books for Young People, is the highest honor in children’s literature.
Awarded every two years, it selects one winner each for writing and illustration worldwide.
In 2022, Korean illustrator Lee Suzy won the award.
