동계스포츠 꿈나무들의 도전과 열정이 빛날 ‘2024 강원 동계청소년올림픽(강원2024)’ 개막이 약 한 달 앞으로 다가왔다.
Starting in just under a month, the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics (Gangwon 2024) is poised to illuminate the challenges and passions of a new generation of winter sports athletes.
지난 12~13일 해외문화홍보원과 2024 강원 동계청소년올림픽 조직위원회(조직위)는 대회 개막을 앞두고 준비 상황을 공유하고자 내외신 기자를 대상으로 ‘강원 2024 팸투어’를 진행했다.
From Dec. 12-13, the Korean Culture and Information Service and the competition’s organizing committee held a media familiarization tour for domestic and foreign reporters to show the state of preparation ahead of the tournament.
미국, 러시아, 베트남, 중국, 호주, 한국 등 6개국 출신으로 구성된 기자단은 강릉 컬링센터, 강릉 스피드 스케이트장, 평창 알펜시아 슬라이딩 센터 등 경기장을 둘러보고 준비 상황을 살폈다.
Journalists from the U.S., Russia, Vietnam, China, Australia and Korea toured competition venues like Gangneung Curling Centre, the Gangneung Oval and Alpensia Sliding Centre to see their preparation.
12일 오전 프레스 투어 첫 일정으로 강릉 컬링센터를 찾았다. 2018 평창 동계올림픽(평창 올림픽) 당시 한국 여자 컬링 대표팀 ‘팀 킴’(김은정·김경애·김초희·김선영·김영미)이 은메달을 따내며 한국 컬링의 새 역사를 써낸 곳이다. 이날 ‘팀 킴’의 의성여고 후배이자 강원2024 컬링 국가대표 장유빈, 이소원 선수가 경기장을 방문했다.
On the morning of Dec. 12, the reporters visited the curling center on the first leg of the tour. The national women’s curling team, dubbed “Team Kim” since all of its members have the same surname — Kim Eun-Jung, Kim Yeong-mi, Kim Seon-yeong, Kim Kyeong-ae and Kim Cho-hi — made history in 2018 by winning the silver medal at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Also, there were curlers Jang Yu-bin and Lee So-won, both of whom will compete in Gangwon 2024 and are from Team Kim’s alma mater Uiseong Girls’ High School.
장 선수는 “평창 올림픽에서 선배들의 모습을 보면서 컬링 선수의 꿈을 키웠다”며 “남은 기간 잘 훈련해서 좋은 성적을 거두겠다”고 말했다. 이 선수 또한 “‘팀 킴’이 은메달을 땄던 이곳에서 꼭 메달을 따고 싶다”며 선전을 다짐했다.
“Watching my seniors at the PyeongChang Olympics made me dream of becoming a curler,” Jang said, “I’ll train well over the rest of the year to achieve good results.” Lee added, “I definitely want to win a medal here, where Team Kim won the silver.”
장소를 옮겨 올림픽 정식 종목인 5대5 하키 경기와 강원2024에서 신설된 3대3 경기가 진행되는 강릉 하키센터를 방문했다. 이 경기장을 관리하는 아이스 메이커 정명수 소장은 “3대3 경기를 먼저 치른 다음 5대5 경기를 진행해야 하기에 16시간 안에 두께를 올린 얼음을 다시 깎아 내는 전환 연습을 하고 있다”며 “이 작업은 국내에서 최초로 이뤄지는 작업이라 여러 번 연습을 거쳐야 한다”고 설명했다.
The group went on to visit Gangneung Hockey Centre, which will host the Olympic sport of five-on-five hockey and the three-on-three format newly adopted for Gangwon 2024.
“We have to play three-on-three first and then five-on-five, so we’re practicing transitioning within 16 hours from thick to thin ice,” said Jeong Myung-soo, the ice maker who manages the center. “This is a first in the nation, so we must practice several times.”
프레스 투어 둘째 날에는 강원2024 개회식이 열리는 강릉 스피드 스케이트장을 둘러본 뒤 봅슬레이, 스켈레톤, 루지 경기가 진행될 평창 알펜시아 슬라이딩센터를 방문했다. 평창 올림픽 당시 국가대표 윤성빈 선수가 남자 스켈레톤에서 한국 최초로 금메달을 딴 곳이다.
On the second day of the tour, the group toured the Gangneung Oval, where the opening ceremony will take place, before visiting the sliding center, which will host bobsledding, skeleton, and luge. Yun Sungbin won the country’s first gold medal in men’s skeleton at the PyeongChang Olympics.
이날 경기장에서 만난 루지 청소년 국가대표 김하윤 선수는 자국에서 펼쳐지는 첫 동계청소년올림픽에 대한 기대감을 감추지 않았다. 그는 “실제 경기장에서 꾸준히 훈련한 만큼 더 나은 성적을 거둘 수 있다”며 자신감을 드러냈다. 또 “해외 대부분의 트랙과 달리 평창 트랙은 유스, 주니어, 레이디 트랙 출발점이 이어져 있어 쉴 공간이 있어 더 편하다”고 경기장의 이점을 설명했다.
National luger Kim Ha-yoon expressed excitement over his country’s first hosting of the Winter Youth Olympics. “I can achieve better results because I’ve been training consistently at the actual stadium,” he said. “Unlike most tracks overseas, the one in Pyeongchang-gun is more convenient because the starting lines for the youth, junior, and women’s tracks are connected so there’s space to rest.”
김재환 강원2024 조직위 대변인은 이날 2018 평창동계올림픽기념관에서 열린 ‘강원2024 대회 경과 및 준비 상황 보고’에서 “강원도는 이미 동계 올림픽을 성공적으로 개최한 경험이 있다”며 “평창 올림픽의 유산을 바탕으로 열리는 이번 대회는 올림픽 전과 후 그리고 대회 기간 동안 진행되는 다양한 문화 활동을 통해 청소년들에게 즐거움을 줄 것”이라고 밝혔다.
“Gangwon-do Province has experience in successfully hosting a Winter Olympics,” committee spokesperson Kim Jaehwan said in announcing the event’s progress and preparation status report at the PyeongChang Olympic Museum. “Based on the legacy of the PyeongChang Olympics, this competition will entertain youth through a variety of cultural activities before, during, and after the Games.”
