이창동 감독 신작 ‘가능한 사랑’이 제83회 베네치아영화제에서 심사위원대상을 받았다. Director Lee Chang-dong’s new feature “Possible Love” is the first Korean film to win the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Lion) at the Venice International Film Festival of Italy.
‘가능한 사랑’은 12일(현지 시간) 이탈리아 베네치아에서 열린 영화제 폐막식에서 심사위원대상(은사자상) 수상작으로 호명됐다. 이 감독이 베네치아영화제에서 수상한 것은 2002년 ‘오아시스’로 감독상(은사자상)을 받은 이후 24년 만이다.
His work was announced on Sept. 12 as the winner of the honor at the closing ceremony, Lee’s first prize at the festival in over two decades since he won Best Director for “Oasis” in 2002.
이 감독은 수상 무대에서 “노동이 사라져 가는 시대에, 사람과 사람 사이의 관계가 끊어져 가는 시대에 저는 영화로 무엇을 할 수 있는지, 영화가 무엇을 해야만 하는지 질문하기 위해 이 영화를 만들었다”며 “이 상을 주신 것은 그 질문을 계속하라는 뜻으로 알겠다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
“At a time when labor is disappearing and relationships between people are breaking down, I made this film to ask what I can do through cinema and what cinema must do,” he said in his acceptance speech. “I consider this award a sign to keep asking these questions.”
‘가능한 사랑’은 이 감독이 ‘버닝'(2018) 이후 8년 만에 내놓은 신작이자 첫 넷플릭스 영화다. 미옥(전도연)과 해고당한 남편 호석(설경구)이 해고 노동자를 취재하는 다큐멘터리 감독 예지(조여정)와 그의 부유한 집안 출신 남편 상우(조인성)를 만나면서 계급적 배경이 다른 이들이 서로의 삶과 욕망을 마주하는 이야기를 그렸다.
“Possible Love” — Lee’s first feature film in eight years since 2018’s “Burning” and his first made for Netflix — is about Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) and her laid-off husband Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu) and their meeting with documentary director Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), who is working on a piece on laid-off workers, and her husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung), who comes from a wealthy family.
The film depicts how different socioeconomic backgrounds affect one’s life and desires.
영화는 폐막식에 앞서 국제비평가연맹상도 받으며 작품성을 인정받았다. It also earned the FIPRESCI Prize of the Germany-based International Federation of Film Critics before the closing ceremony.
올해 베네치아영화제 최고상인 황금사자상은 마이 엘투키 감독의 ‘우먼 언노운’에 돌아갔다. 감독상(은사자상)은 일리야 흐르자놉스키 감독의 ‘다우’가 받았다.
The Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice festival, went to “Woman Unknown” by director May el-Toukhy, and the Silver Lion for Best Director to Ilya Khrzhanovsky for “Dau.”
한편, 이재명 대통령은 13일 이 감독의 수상에 “지난 뤼미에르 서밋에서 감독님과 배우분들을 뵈었을 때 작품에 대한 현지의 뜨거운 관심을 직접 전해 들었다” 며 “그때의 기대가 좋은 결실로 이어져 더욱 기쁘다”고 축하했다.
President Lee Jae Myung on Sept. 13 conveyed his congratulations to the director, saying, “When I met the director and cast at the recent Lumiere Summit, I directly heard from them the immense local interest in the film,” adding, “I’m all the more pleased to see the expectations I had at the time bear positive results.”
이어 “이번 수상을 계기로 한국 영화의 다양성이 더욱 넓어지고, 좋은 작품들이 세계 관객들과 더 많이 만날 수 있기를 바란다”며 “앞으로도 한국 영화의 빛나는 여정을 응원하겠다”고 덧붙였다.
“I hope this award is an opportunity to widen the diversity of Korean cinema and enable more outstanding works to reach global audiences,” the president added. “I will continue backing the remarkable journey of Korean cinema.”
