한국이 쿠바와 수교를 맺었다. The nation has formed official relations with Cuba.
외교부는 “한국과 쿠바는 14일(현지 시간) 미국 뉴욕에서 양국 주유엔대표부 간 외교 공한 교환을 통해 양국간 대사급 외교관계 수립에 합의했다”고 이날 발표했다.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Feb. 14 said in a news release, “On 14 February 2024, diplomatic and consular relations were established between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Cuba, through the exchange of diplomatic notes between the permanent representations of both countries to the United Nations in New York.”
이로써 중남미 카리브 지역 국가 중 유일한 미수교국이었던 쿠바는 한국의 193번째 수교국이 됐다. Cuba, which had been the only Caribbean country lacking official ties with Korea in Central and South America, became the nation’s 193rd diplomatic partner.
외교부는 이번 수교에 대해 ”한국의 대중남미 외교 강화를 위한 중요한 전환점으로서 글로벌중추국가로서 한국의 외교지평을 더욱 확장하는데 기여할 것으로 기대된다”고 밝혔다.
The ministry highlighted the significance of this turning point to boost the nation’s diplomacy in the region, calling it a catalyst for extending Korea’s diplomatic reach as a global pivotal country.
이어 ”양국간 실질 협력 확대에 기여할 것으로 예상되며 쿠바를 방문하는 한국인에 대한 체계적인 영사 조력도 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다”고 덧붙였다. The ministry also predicted higher practical collaboration with Cuba and systematic consular assistance for Koreans visiting the island country.
코로나19 이전까지 쿠바를 찾은 한국인 수는 연간 약 1만 4000명 수준이고, 양국 교역량은 2022년 기준 수출이 1400만 달러, 수입은 700만 달러에 달했다.
Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of Koreans visiting Cuba was around 14,000 per year. Bilateral trade in 2022 saw USD 14 million in exports for Korea and USD 7 million in imports.
외교부에 따르면 한국과 쿠바는 그동안 문화, 인적교류 등 비정치 분야를 중심으로 교류 및 협력을 확대해 왔다. 특히 최근 활발한 문화교류를 통해 양 국민간 우호인식이 확산된 것이 이번 수교에도 기여한 것으로 평가했다. 서울에서는 쿠바 영화제가, 쿠바 현지에서는 아바나 국제영화제 계기 한국영화 특별전이 개최되고, 쿠바 현지에는 약 1만명 규모의 한류 팬클럽이 운영되는 등 양국간 문화교류가 꾸준히 이뤄지고 있다.
The ministry also highlighted the continuous expansion of bilateral exchange and collaboration, particularly in non-political areas like culture and human exchange. It added that recent instances of brisk cultural exchange greatly enhanced recognition of mutual understanding and friendly relations between the people of both countries, thus contributing to the establishment of official relations.
Steady cultural exchange between both sides included a Cuban film festival in Seoul, an exhibition of Korean works at the Havana Film Festival, and a Hallyu (Korean Wave) fan club in Cuba with some 10,000 members.
한국 정부는 쿠바 정부와 상호 상주 공관 개설 등 수교 후속 조치를 적극적으로 협의해 나갈 예정이다. Seoul will also hold talks with Havana on follow-up measures for forming official relations that will cover issues like setting up a diplomatic mission in each country.
