‘배구 여제’ 김연경이 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)가 수여하는 ‘성평등, 다양성, 포용성-GEDI 챔피언스 어워즈’ 아시아지역 수상자로 선정됐다.
Former volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung is this year’s Asian regional winner of the Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champions Awards of the International Olympic Committee.
GEDI 챔피언스 어워즈는 스포츠를 통해 성평등과 다양성, 포용성 가치 확산에 기여한 개인을 선정해 시상하는 상이다. 전 세계와 각 대륙을 대표하는 수상자를 선정한다.
The honor recognizes individuals representing the world and each continent who contribute to promoting gender equality, diversity and inclusion through sports.
선수 시절 세계 정상급 활약으로 한국 여자배구의 위상을 높였던 김연경은 은퇴 이후에도 스포츠 현장에서 여성 선수 참여 확대와 리더십 강화, 안전하고 공정한 스포츠 환경 조성을 위한 다양한 활동을 이어왔다.
As a player, Kim raised the status of women’s volleyball in Korea with world-class performances. Since retiring, she has sought to expand female participation in athletics, strengthen leadership, and create a safe and fair sports environment.
KYK재단을 설립한 그는 청소년 선수 지원과 스포츠 참여 확대를 위한 활동을 추진하고 있다.
She launched her KYK Foundation to help youth athletes and expand their participation in sports.
재단은 경제적 여건으로 스포츠 활동을 지속하기 어려운 청소년 선수를 위한 장학 프로그램과 훈련 지원 제도를 운영 중이다. 특히 여학생 선수가 겪는 참여 장벽을 낮추고 지속적인 스포츠 활동을 지원하는 데 중점을 두고 프로그램을 가동하고 있다.
Her foundation offers scholarships and training support to help young athletes who financially struggle to continue sports activities. Its focus is on lowering barriers to female sports participation and helping them continue.
