제79회 칸 영화제 심사위원장인 박찬욱 감독이 프랑스 정부가 수여하는 최고 권위의 문화예술공로훈장 (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres)을 받았다. Director Park Chan-wook, jury president at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, has won the Order of Arts and Letters, the French government’s highest cultural honor.
한국의 영화감독으로서 세계 영화사에 남긴 업적과 프랑스 문화예술계와 이어온 긴밀한 협력 관계를 대외적으로 인정받았다는 평가다.
This reflects global recognition of his achievements in global cinema as a film director and his close ties with French culture and arts.
연합뉴스, 로이터 통신 등 국내외 매체에 따르면 17일(현지 시간) 카트린 페가르 프랑스 문화 장관은 칸에서 박 감독에게 ‘코망되르'(Commandeur) 훈장을 수여했다.
Domestic and foreign media such as Yonhap News and Reuters said French Minister of Culture Catherine Pegard gave Park the Commander medal at the festival.
문화예술공로훈장은 프랑스 문화부가 1957년 제정한 훈장으로 프랑스를 포함한 세계 문화·예술 발전에 기여한 인물에게 수여된다. 등급은 코망되르, 오피시에(Officier), 슈발리에(Chevalier) 등 세 단계로 나뉘며 코망되르는 최고 등급이다.
Launched in 1957 by the French Ministry of Culture, the Order of Arts and Letters goes to individuals who have contributed to the development of culture and arts in France and around the world. It has three categories in order of prestige: Commander, Officer and Knight.
한국인이 이 훈장을 받은 건 지난 2002년 김정옥 당시 한국문화예술진흥원장과 2011년 지휘자 정명훈, 지난해 소프라노 조수미 씨에 이어 박 감독이 네 번째다.
Park is the fourth Korean to receive this award, following Kim Jeong-ok in 2002, conductor Chung Myung-whun in 2011 and soprano Sumi Jo last year.
박 감독은 훈장 수훈 후 자신의 작품 세계에 프랑스 영화와 철학이 막대한 영향을 미쳤음을 밝히며 “프랑스에서 받은 모든 영향이 내게 종합되는 그런 기분을 받았다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
After receiving the medal, Park said his work was heavily influenced by French cinema and philosophy, adding, “I felt as if all the influences I received in France came together within me.”
이어 박 감독은 “내가 프랑스로부터 많은 영향을 받은 것만큼, 또 지금도 받는 것만큼 나 자신이 프랑스의 젊은 감독들에게 어떤 영향을 조금이라도 주고 있는 것 같아서 너무나 감동적이고 뿌듯하다”고 감격해했다.
“Just as I’ve been influenced by France and continue to be, I’m incredibly moved and proud to think I, in turn, might be having a small influence on young French directors.”
그는 그동안 칸과 각별한 인연을 이어왔다. 2004년 영화 ‘올드보이’로 심사위원대상을 수상하며 세계적인 주목을 받았다. 2009년 ‘박쥐’로 심사위원상, 2022년 ‘헤어질 결심’으로 감독상을 각각 거머쥐었다. 2017년에는 경쟁 부문 심사위원으로 참여하며 칸과의 인연을 이어간 바 있다.
Park has a long-standing and storied connection with the festival. He won the Grand Prix (Jury Prize) for Oldboy in 2004 and again for Thirst in 2009, as well as Best Director for Decision to Leave in 2022.
In 2017, he was a jury member in the Competition section.
