한국 대학에 입학한 외국인 유학생이 6년 만에 75% 급증하며 연간 11만 명을 넘어선 것으로 나타났다.
The number of foreign students enrolled in domestic universities has surged 75% over the past six years, surpassing 110,000 annually.
법무부가 지난 2019년부터 2025년까지 국내 대학에 입학한 외국인 유학생 53만 557명(교환학생 포함)과 졸업생 15만 2107명(교환학생 제외)의 출신 국가와 국내 거주지 등을 분석한 결과를 4일 발표했다.
The Ministry of Justice on Sept. 4 said this in releasing an analysis of the nationalities and residences of 530,557 such students (including exchange students) from 2019-25, as well as 152,107 graduates (excluding exchange students).
분석 결과 지난해 외국인 유학생 신규 입학자는 11만 7333명으로 지난 2019년(6만 6915명)보다 75% 늘었다.
The study found that 117,333 students from abroad newly enrolled last year, up 75% from 66,915 in 2019.
지역별로는 충북, 경북, 전남, 경기에서 증가세가 두드러졌다. 전공별로는 임상병리학·간호·돌봄(296%)과 반도체 관련 학과(138%)의 입학자 수가 빠르게 증가했다.
By region, the rise in number was pronounced in the provinces of Chungcheongbuk-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeollanam-do and Gyeonggi-do. By field of study, clinical pathology, nursing and caregiving saw enrollment skyrocket 296% and semiconductor-related programs 138%.
국적별 증가율은 미얀마(828%)와 네팔(768%)이 압도적이었다. 입학자 규모에서는 중국(3만 6000명)과 베트남(2만 6000명) 등이 상위권을 유지했다.
Students from Myanmar (828%) and Nepal (768%) saw incredibly high growth rates, but China (36,000) and Vietnam (26,000) remained the top countries sending international students to Korea.
졸업 후 출국한 유학생을 제외한 졸업자의 취업률은 34.3%로 집계됐다. 국적별로는 인도, 파키스탄, 인도네시아 순으로 높았다.
The employment rate for graduates, excluding those who left Korea after graduation, was 34.3%. By nationality, those from India, Pakistan and Indonesia had the highest percentages in that order.
전공별 취업률은 공학(59.1%), 의약(54.6%), 자연(44.1%) 계열이 강세를 보였다. 지역별로는 울산광역시(57.4%), 경상남도(51.9%), 전북특별자치도(40.5%) 소재 대학 졸업자의 취업률이 40%를 넘었다.
By major, graduates of engineering (59.1%), medicine and pharmacy (54.6%), and natural sciences (44.1%) saw the highest employment rates. The rates surpassed 40% among graduates in Ulsan (57.4%), Gyeongsangnam-do Province (51.9%) and Jeollabuk-do Province (40.5%).
취업자 2만 2576명 중 54%가 수도권 소재 대학 출신이며, 이 가운데 90%가 수도권에서 취업했다. 강원도를 제외한 모든 지역에서 취업자의 절반 이상이 대학 소재 지역에서 일자리를 잡은 것으로 파악됐다.
Of 22,576 employed graduates, 54% graduated from universities in the Seoul metropolitan area (Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi-do Province) and 90% of them got jobs in the region. Except in Gangwon-do Province, over half of those employed found employment around their schools.
법무부는 이번 분석 결과를 바탕으로 유학생 정책과 유학 비자(D-2) 제도 개선을 논의하고 있다. 유학생의 입국부터 재학, 졸업, 정착까지 관리하기 위한 혁신 과제를 구체화해 9월 중 발표할 예정이라고 밝혔다.
Based on the analysis results, the ministry is discussing improvements to policies for international students and the D-2 student visa system. It will finalize and announce innovative actions this month to manage such students from arrival and enrollment to graduation and settlement in Korea.
