세계 최상위권 ‘A-리스트 영화제’로 격상된 부산국제영화제(BIFF)가 한층 높아진 국제적 위상을 발판으로 다음 달 개막을 향한 닻을 올렸다.
The annual Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), now upgraded to an “A-list” global cinematic event, is gearing up for its latest edition next month.
정한석 부산국제영화제 집행위원장은 1일 서울 중구 대한상공회의소에서 열린 BIFF 공식 개최 기자회견에서 “지난해 30회 영화제 이후 BIFF의 국제적 위상이 수직 상승한 것이 사실”이라며 “국제적 인정과 교류 등을 BIFF가 맡게 됐다는 점을 말씀드리고자 한다”고 말했다.
At a news conference for the event at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul’s Jung-gu District, BIFF Director Jung Hanseok said, “BIFF’s global status has indeed skyrocketed since its 30th edition last year.”
” I emphasize that BIFF has taken on the role of raising international recognition and exchange.”
지난 3월 국제영화제작자연맹(FIAPF)은 BIFF를 세계 최상위 등급인 ‘A-리스트’ 영화제 17곳에 새롭게 포함했다.
In March, the International Federation of Film Producers Associations added BIFF to its list of the world’s top 17 “A-list” movie festivals.
이와 함께 지난 5월 BIFF 경쟁부문 최고상인 ‘부산 어워드’ 대상 수상작은 미국 아카데미 국제장편영화상 출품 자격을 새롭게 인정받았다. 아카데미가 국제장편영화상 출품 자격을 인정한 영화제는 BIFF를 비롯해 칸, 베네치아, 베를린, 선댄스, 토론토 6개뿐이다.
The winner of the Busan Award, the top prize in BIFF’s Competition section, is now eligible for submission to the Best International Feature Film category of the Academy Awards. The U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is in charge of the Oscars, recognizes only six festivals that can submit films: BIFF, Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Sundance and Toronto.
BIFF는 7일 영화와 영상 콘텐츠의 미래를 논의하는 ‘뤼미에르 서밋’에도 참석한다. 한국과 프랑스 정상이 이끄는 이번 행사는 프랑스 남부 생폴드방스에서 30여 개국에서 초청된 150명의 주요 인사들이 한자리에 모인다.
BIFF on Sept. 7 will take part in the Lumiere Summit in southern France for talks on the future of film and video content. President Lee Jae Myung and French counterpart Emmanuel Macron will be among some 150 leading figures from about 30 countries at the event.
올해 영화제 주요 프로그램과 초청작도 이날 기자회견에서 공개됐다. The main programs and featured works of this year’s BIFF were unveiled at the news conference.
공식 초청작은 59개국 246편, 월드 프리미어 영화만 95편에 달한다. 개막작은 김종관 감독의 ‘낮과 밤은 서로에게’가 선정됐다. 여름에서 가을 사이, 한 카페에서 네 쌍의 남녀가 나누는 유쾌하고 담백하며 사랑스러운 대화의 영화다.
The selection features 246 works from 59 countries, including 95 world premieres. The opening film is Kim Jong-kwan’s “The Table: Day and Night,” the story of a lighthearted, down-to-Earth and endearing conversation among four couples at a cafe set between summer and fall.
세계적 거장의 최신작을 선보이는 ‘아이콘 섹션’에서는 역대 최대 규모인 36편이 상영된다. 칸영화제 황금종려상을 받은 크리스티안 문쥬 감독의 ‘피오르’, 칸영화제 여우주연상 수상작인 하마구치 류스케 감독의 ‘갑자기 병세가 악화되다’ 등이 상영된다. 이창동 감독의 ‘가능한 사랑’과 홍상수 감독의 ‘눈 둘 데가 없네’도 관객과 만난다.
The Icon section, which features the latest works by globally acclaimed directors, will screen a record 36 films. They include “Fjord” by director Cristian Mungiu and “All of a Sudden,” the top prize winner at this year’s Cannes Film Festival by director Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
The domestic works “Possible Love” by director Lee Chang-dong and “Nowhere to Lay My Eyes” by director Hong Sang-soo will also be shown as part of this section.
애니메이션 영화의 약진도 올해 영화제 특징이다. 지난해 중국과 일본에서 흥행 1위 영화 작품이 애니메이션이었고, 넷플릭스 ‘케이팝 데몬 헌터스’가 세계적인 흥행을 거두는 등 영화계의 애니메이션 영향력이 커진 흐름을 반영했다.
This year’s BIFF also reflects the global rise of animation, a genre whose films topped the box office in China and Japan last year and saw Netflix’s supernova “KPop Demon Hunters” become a world phenomenon.
이에 BIFF는 한국에서 접하기 어려웠던 일본 애니메이션 장·단편 13편을 중심으로 소개하는 ‘일본 애니메이션 특별전: 광기의 걸작, 전율의 기대작 12+1’을 마련했다.
Accordingly, the festival’s program “Japanese Animation Special: Masterpieces of Madness, Exhilarating Prospects 12+1” will screen 13 animated features and shorts from Japan not readily accessible in Korea.
올해로 두 번째를 맞은 경쟁 부문에서는 14편의 주목할 만한 작품이 최고상인 ‘부산 어워드 대상’을 놓고 경쟁을 펼친다.
Marking its second year, the Competition section will have 14 films vie for the Busan Award, BIFF’s top prize.
세계적인 감독과 배우들의 부산행도 이어진다. 아시아 배우 최초로 아카데미 여우주연상을 수상한 말레이시아 출신 양자경이 ‘올해의 아시아영화인상’ 수상을 위해 부산을 찾는다.
Befitting its newly acquired A-list status, the festival will also attract top directors and actors from across the globe. Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian to win the Oscar for Best Actress, will attend to accept BIFF’s Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award.
프랑스의 전설적인 배우 이자벨 위페르, 인도네시아의 국민 배우 크리스틴 하킴도 영화제에 참석한다. 한국 관객에게도 친숙한 이란의 거장 감독 마지드 마지디는 경쟁 부문 초청작 ‘빵과 책’을 통해 처음으로 한국을 방문한다.
Celebrated French actor Isabelle Huppert and Indonesian counterpart Christine Hakim will also be there, while Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi, a familiar name to Korean audiences, will make his first visit to the nation with his Competition entry “Midday Meal.”
BIFF는 다음달 6일부터 15일까지 부산 영화의전당 등 8개 극장 31개 스크린에서 열린다. BIFF will run from Oct. 6-15 at Busan Cinema Center and seven other theaters spanning 31 screens.
