Drawing the Fine Line Between ‘Love’ and ‘Interference’

Parents always want to give to their children and want to know what they are up to. However, too much love can turn to interference that could prevent children from communicating with parents. What is the difference between love and interference? Let us take a step backward and learn how to be a better parent.

Seung-ho(assumed name)’s parents are frustrated with their adolescent son. Their son, who used to be a wellbehaved boy, started going out with his friends more often and disrespecting her. Seung-ho’s parents, upset by his behavior, set curfews and tried to control him but it only deepened the conflicts.

When he is not home until late, the parents couldn’t go to sleep thinking he might be in trouble. When the parents approached him to have a conversation, Seung-ho just pretended he was listening. His attitude didn’t seem to change. Seung-ho’s mom eventually went to counseling. However, it turns out Seung-ho was as frustrated as she was.

Interference Comes From Distrust of Your Children
“I just want to run away because of my parents interfering with my life in every way. When I’m hanging out with my friends, they ask me to take pictures of the place we are at. It drives me crazy. I listened to them because I was young. I can’t just do it anymore.”

Many parents mistake interference for love. However, interference is just distrust of their children. Parents interfere with their children because they simply don’t trust them. Too much of interference and control turns the whole parent-child relationship sour. Once the relationship is damaged, parents cannot expect changes in their children no matter how good their advice may be.

For instance if a nagging boss at work has dragged you down and inflicted deep wounds on you, you would not want to listen to the boss at all. It is the same with children. Once the relationship is cracked due to the parents’ interference and control, their words would not carry weight.
Seung-ho’s mom protects him, worrying that something may go wrong with him because he suffered a heart disease when he was young. She interferes with all of his choices and controls him. Seung-ho followed her decisions and obeyed her. It was difficult for him to hang out with his friends and almost impossible to join group activities like going camping.

After all, Seung-ho started being bullied. He could not learn how to be social among his friends because his parents’ fear for his safety prevented him from learning it. Seung-ho became alone and had a hard time at school. His solution to solve the problem was to hang out with his friends more often.

Parents: Advisor that Allows Mistakes
What will happen if Seung-ho grows up in the interference and control of his parents? His lack of social skills will result in problem not only at school but also at work in the future. When faced difficulties, he will try to rely on someone rather than trying to solve them by himself. Too much interference prevents children from learning by making mistakes and developing problem solving skills.

Too much of interference and overprotection further prevents children from becoming independent. No matter how much parents love their child, they cannot be there for the child forever. The problem is that many parents do not let go of their child. Storms make trees take deeper roots. Children are the same; they grow strong as a result of hardship. They need parents’ help time to time but as an advisor. It is important to let them be the judge and make their own decisions. Parents can guide them but cannot interfere with their every little choice. It is better to wait until they ask for help.

When parents pay attention to their children’s interest rather than interfering with them while allowing them to make mistakes, they grow. Children who grew up with such support from their parents remain emotionally stable, positive, and satisfied with their life. They grow up when facing challenges with limited resources. They will study when they want to know more about things and they will throw themselves into challenge when they have curiosity.

Excessive interference will only discourage children’s motivation and create an invisible yet giant wall between parents and children.
